HP Photosmart Wireless e-All-in-One Printer - B110a

I have recently installed my trusty printer on a new HP laptop.   When printing from MS Office or Adobe reader all is fine.  However, if I try to print from any browser (IE, Edge, Firefox), the printer properties dialog box is corrupted as shown below and I cannot change any of the properties.  Does anyone have any ideas or solutions?

Thanks in advance.

The dialog may not be correctly reading your English language pack - no excuse, I think; actual English is, after all, an English invention.

Nonetheless, try installing the American English language pack into your Windows File System.

Reference Thread:

Printer Preferences screen corrupt

That done, if the issue persists, consider that the print drivers (Full Feature Software) use a standard Segoe font - which is normally included in the Full Feature Software but might falter if (for example), the font is not available on your Windows OS.  This is certainly not expected to be the cause of the problem - the font is a standard true-type font and is likely a standard inclusion in your Font library.

Finally, the Full Feature Software for this printer was released in 2015 - much has changed in Windows since that time.  It is likely the software is still supported in your latest version of Windows.  At some point, this may no longer be the case.  For the present, if you have problems - for example, after Windows Updates, consider uninstalling the printer software (from Programs and Features) > Restart the computer and log in > Download-Save-Install a fresh copy of the driver / software > Restart the computer and log in,.

Hi Dragon-Fur

Thanks for your helpful response.  I have installed the American English language pack, checked that I have Segoe  font and uninstalled and reloaded the full feature software.   Unfortunately the problem still persists.   I will try a root uninstall as suggested in another post that you sent me a link to.   Incidentaly, I am also running an olser laptop with exactly the same version of Windows 10 and the printer preferences continues to work as expected on this machine as it always has.

Kind regards

You are welcome.

I am sorry it did not help.  I could not test it for you and thought perhaps it was worth trying.  Rats. 🐀

The issue you describe has cropped up before on occasion - and it appears as mis-connection between the printer dialog and the language or font pack.   I would guess it is a broken link somewhere - for example, "something" was updated in Windows and one or more of the millions of tiny instructions in the File System was moved, lost, rewritten - the printer software lost track of the change / location / library.

There is absolutely no reason to believe me, by the way.  Guesses are not diagnostics and in this case, it is not even helpful since it does not fix anything.

Ideas - presented not in any particular order

The Doctor can help with several issues, including driver, connection, and "jobs stuck in the queue".

HP Print and Scan Doctor for Windows

Corruption in the File System is a possibility, though the indicators (again, a guess) might likely be more widespread.  You could try running sfc/scannow

Certainly do search and read what others have done to fix the problem.  The solution is likely simple.  As a side note:  Try to resist making changes to the Registry, for example, and certainly do not change the Registry without first exporting the entire Registry (make a backup of the registry contents).

Run Windows Updates > Check for Updates and do that more than one time over the course of the day.  See if anything crops up that might be helpful - it matter less about the exact update than whether that update would happen to overwrite "whatever" has "gone weird" in your Windows File System.  This suggestion is a bit like tossing crumbs to fish and hoping one will leap from the water and into a bucket.

If you are one of us who create Restore Points on occasion, use System Restore to backtrack the system to a time and date before the problem surfaced.  For example, if you have a Restore Point for October 15th and the problem started on October 20th, try using System Restore to backtrack to October 15th.  Taks the time to read the "affected files" as a means to get an idea of "what is changed".

Still thinking on it.  If I have anything actually useful to add, I will post back.

Edits

I am unhappy with your printer software - it, like the printer, is older.  "Older" software is not bad - older software can become more vulnerable over time to odd occurrences and errors.

Consider / Try

Consider creating a new local account on the computer - after the account is created, "edit" the account and change it to an "admin" type account (administrative privileges).

How to create an account:

Create a user account in Windows

NOTE:  Ignore Microsoft's admonishment regarding creating a local account (an account without a Microsoft login)  - it's fine, you can do this, and the world does not end.

Notes on a local account:

  • When you log into a local account, none of the "automatic" setups that show up when using a Microsoft login will be applied.  For example, you can use OneDrive but you have to log into the OneDrive account with your Microsoft account.  The Microsoft Store is "there" but you have to log into your Microsoft account to access products in the store.
  • If the purpose for which you are creating the local account is successful and you decide to use that account either as a secondary account on the computer or if you decide to copy your own data to the account to take it over as "your own", you can always change the Sign-in Options on the account to switch it over to a Microsoft sign-in.
  • When you switch a local account over over to a Microsoft sign-in account, the original name of the local account is still used on your "top level" account folder.  So what?  If you ever decide to use the account as a Microsoft sign--in account, be sure to choose a name for your local account name that you like.  For example, if the purpose for which the original account as created at a time of desperation and you name your local account "StupidRatAccount", know that the top level folder name "StupidRatAccount" is there forever with the account, even if you switch to a Microsoft sign-in option on the account.

Create the account, switch the account type to "admin"

Log into the account

Copy / download / create a file to be printed.

Open the file

Open the print option

Check the printer dialog

If the new account works, there is perhaps something in your original account that is corrupted.

A couple of choices

  1. Copy your files and folders over to the new account.
  2. Switch original account over to a local account.
  3. Log out / Restart the computer and log in to the new account.
  4. Switch the new account over to a Microsoft account sign-in.
  5. Test the printing setup one more time...
  6. When (and only when) you are positive you have all your data transferred to the new account AND that everything works as expected, you can delete the old / original account.

OR

Consider deleting the contents of your AppData Temp folder as a part of the "clear and clean" process of removing / reinstalling the printer software.  See the section below titled ** Printer Software – Lurking in the User Account **

Remove Printer and Reload Printer Software

Hints

  • Read through the following text, then proceed with the steps that are relevant to your situation.
  • For best results, do not ignore the suggested Restarts
  • Procedure includes optional “extra” clear and clean steps for the purpose training and to help “troubled” software installations. Extra sections are marked with an asterisk pair “**” front and back.
  • In general, most installations tend to work better if Windows Updates and your other computer Updates are installed and current.

Printer Software – Preparation

Find, Download, and Save your printer software on your computer.

Open Support Home

Enter the name of your device (full model name)

Open category Software and Drivers (wording may vary slightly)

Download-and-Save the Full Feature Software or HP Easy Start Printer Setup for your Operating System version.

Printer Software – Uninstall Existing Software

Uninstall existing printer software from Programs and Features.

Method One - Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features >

Method Two - Settings > Apps > Apps and Features >

Search or Scroll down

Uninstall the printer software

After the software is removed, Restart the computer and log in

If printer software will not uninstall, appears to be removed and then shows up again, or is otherwise not “going away” when you tell it to do so, try an Uninstaller program.

Microsoft:  Fix problems that block programs from being installed or removed

** Printer Software – Lurking in the Device Manager **

Check / Verify:  If the printer is still lurking in the Device Manager, remove it.

Control Panel > icon view > Device Manager

Expand category Printers

If any unwanted printer name or “Unknown Device” is listed,

Right-Click on the printer / device > Uninstall

Expand category Imaging Devices

If any unwanted printer name or “Unknown Device” is listed,

Right-Click on the printer / device > Uninstall

Restart the computer and log in

** Printer Drivers – Lurking in Devices and Printers **

Check / Verify:  If the printer drivers are still lurking in Devices and Printers, remove driver(s) related to the printer.

Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers

Left-Click on any unwanted Printer found in the Printers list

Clicking on a printer, displays options along the ribbon (near the top of the Devices and Printers window)

Click Print Server Properties > tab Drivers

Click on Driver(s) in list, select Remove > OK to exit menu

Back in Devices and Printers > Right-Click on the printer > Remove Device

Restart the computer and log in

** Printer Software – Lurking in the User Account **

Check / Verify:  Printer related files and folders are stored in the User AppData hierarchy.  If you have had trouble getting the printer to work, complete this step to delete files from the Temp folder.

Method One - Open File Explorer > Navigate to C:\Users\YourAccount\AppData\Local\Temp

OR Method Two Windows key + X + R (Run command) > type %temp%

Delete the files in the Temp folder (It is expected that some files cannot be deleted, ignore these)

Restart the computer and log in

Installation - Printer Software

NOTES

  • If using USB, disconnect the USB cable between the printer and the computer before starting the installation.
  • Connect the cable when instructed to do so (toward the end of the installation procedure).
  • Some (newer) printer models provide the "Easy Start" install method. When applicable, Easy Start will be found in the Software and Drivers website support page > Category Software \

  • Within Easy Start, you will be given the opportunity to install the software that is available.  Full Feature Software might be described as the "Full Driver" software.

  • Select your Video

** Optional - For Windows 10 Users – Compatibility Mode **

If you have been having trouble getting the printer software to fully install (Printer Assistant is functional and Scanning works), consider using Compatibility.  Note that this method only fixes “one type” of difficulty; installing this way may – or may not – make the necessary difference.

Right-Click on the downloaded installation file > Properties > Compatibility

Check "Run this program in compatibility mode for"

Select Windows 7

Click Apply and OK to close the Properties menu

Right-Click on the installation file and select to Run as Administrator

Firmware

NOTE:  There is no firmware update for this printer and / or the Operating System version.

Consider installing the printer Firmware

READ (when provided) all information and instructions before installing the firmware

If / After the firmware is installed, Restart the computer and log in

Reminder:  Firmware is normally updated after the printer software is installed / functional.

** Port Issues - Create a TCP/IP port **

The assigned port may fail to connect the printer or certain printer activities (Scan).  Create / Switch to a TCP/IP Port to facilitate communication and prevent ‘offline’ issues

How-to “Create TCP Port” Contributed by  greenturtle:

Create TCP IP port

1. Print a Configuration Page to get the printer's IPv4 address (you can also tap on the wireless icon on the Front panel of your Printer to get the IP address)
2. On your PC, go to Control Panel, from Devices and Printers, Right-Click the printer and Left-Click Printer Properties, select the Ports tab.
3. Click Add Port, select Standard TCP/IP Port, then select New Port and follow the wizard.
4. Type in the proper IP address for the printer.

This video resource will show you how to do it:
Create & Use TCP IP port

Note that you can ALWAYS revert back to the original port that the HP software installed by selecting the HP port under the Ports tab (in Printer Properties)

You are welcome.

Know that these suggestions are little more than a bit of guessing; the results might be disappointing in the end.

If all else fails and you have backups of your personal data (just in case), you might consider loading Windows - not a complete recovery; do as little as possible to kick the OS back into shape - Reset, for example.

Good Luck.
