HP OfficeJet Pro 8710
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

Hoping this group might have some answers for me.

I have multiple PCs on my home network, all connected to my Xfinity router via ethernet. I also have a few devices connected via Wi-Fi, including my HP OfficeJet Pro 8710.

Everything has the latest software, drivers, etc. (I’m a touch obsessive about that).

Anyway, I was checking my Device Manager a couple of days ago, and I noticed it was flashing or reloading roughly every two seconds.

I don’t recall seeing this behavior before a few weeks ago, and I tried all my typical troubleshooting things – disable startups, services, basic startup, etc. – but nothing stopped the flashing.

I have everything backed up, so I figured I’d start from scratch, add a little software at a time, and see if this behavior corrected.

At first, it did. Starting with a fresh copy of Windows 10 Home, adding basic drivers and applications a couple at a time, and things were still working fine. Went to bed, woke up, checked the Device Manager, and it was flashing.

I tried to start fresh again, and this time played with the hardware, too. I have a CPU cooler that’s connected to the motherboard via the CPU fan header and USB 2.0 header. Also, a couple of SSDs, and I made sure everything was connected securely. If my next test didn’t tell me what I wanted to know, I was going to disconnect some things and try again.

Anyway, the same thing happened. Installed Win10, added drivers, applications, the Device Manager was fine. Came back a few hours later, and it’s flashing. But I noticed something odd.

The Device Manager only seemed to do that when the HP 8710 was connected, and the drivers installed (which happens automatically – at least partially – when my PC “sees” the printer on the network).

I turned the printer off, and the Device Manager stopped flashing. I turned it on, and – not right away, but eventually – it started flashing again.

I checked another desktop PC on my network, and the same thing is happening. Its Device Manager flashes when the HP 8710 is on, and it stops when the printer is off.

So, not sure what negative impacts this is having other than it makes adjusting the settings in the Device Manager rather difficult to work with. But I’d love to know what the real problem is and what I might be able to do about it.

Thanks very much!

@Xebeche,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

I reviewed your post and I understand that the device manager is flashing when the printer is connected.

Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.

I recommend you update the printer firmware following the steps in the below article and check if it helps.

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02919168

If you continue facing the issue, then root uninstall the printer and then reinstall it and check.

Here is how it is done.

1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2.) Select your HP Printer

3.) Select Uninstall

4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'

6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.

7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)

8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab

9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10.) Select Ok

11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12.) Close Devices and Printers

13.) Restart the PC

14.) Download and install the printer software from the below link.

Hello again.

My PC seems to have a few different labels/names than those in your excellent instructions, but I think I know what I'm doing well enough to get to the right items and perform the right tasks. Unfortunately,  the flashing Device Manager problem is still there.

Thanks again, The_Fossette,

That was the first thing I attempted as per your instructions. The Smart app told me I already had the latest firmware.
