Microsoft Surface Book 2
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My HP Officejet Pro 7740 printer used to work well for more than a year, with my Surface Book-2. One day, the printer machine had started playing up and had kept going crazy like, can't scan, print now and then, despite all software updates.

Yesterday, 25 of May 2020, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the printer program and had only ended up a messy outcome. The strangest thing was that the reinstallation process had completed ("Installation Finished", as per HP's wording), the program can be found at the 'Features and Program' at the Control Panel.

What went crazier was a message dialogue box would appear with the following wordings, "DO YOU WANT TO ALLOW THIS APP TO MAKE CHANGES TO YOUR DEVICE?" its time, I triggered the print or scan command. I don't understand what went wrong, I already tried all the fixing/troubleshooting options that can be found at the HP website, but to no avail.

I appreciate it if and when someone out there can help. Cheers!

Welcome to HP support community.

Did you uninstall the printer driver from root level before installing the driver?

If not, follow the below steps:

Perform root level uninstallation to remove all the printer related software's.

  • In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.
  • Select your HP printer.
  • Select Uninstall.
  • In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.
  • In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”
  • Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.
  • Type printui.exe /s and click OK.
  • Click on Drivers tab.
  • Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click Remove at the bottom.
  • Select OK.
  • Remove all instances of the same.
  • Select Apply and OK on the Print Server Properties windows.
  • Close Devices and Printers.
  • Restart the PC again.

Download and install printer full feature driver

I hope that helps.

To thank me for my efforts to help you, please mark my post as an accepted solution so that it benefits several others.
