Greetings @Christyw,

Thanks for the post.

I understand that you are unable to access the printer assistant on your computer, is that right?

Not to worry, I will be glad to assist you.

Have you tried any troubleshooting steps on your own?

Are you able to print and copy fine?

Did you change the router recently?

Have you tried to complete the setup when you launch the printer assistant?

The Icon on the desktop of your computer is called printer assistant.

Sometimes if the printer assistant is updated, you would have to reconfigure it.

The usual option that comes is "setup the device" if the software was updated.

If you see the option that says set up the device, click on it and complete the setup.

This should resolve the issue you are facing and will be able to use the printer assistant.

If you are still unable to access the printer assistant, please follow the procedure mentioned below to remove the printer software and settings and install it back.

  • Uninstall the printer from "programs and features" which can be accessed by doing a right-click on the Windows button (Please have the printer Off and disconnected during uninstallation.)
  • Check in device manager, if the printer is listed there, please delete it. (Right click on the Windows button to access device manager)
  • Go to devices and printers, select any printer listed there and you will get some options on the top.
  • Click on print server properties.
  • You will get a popup, click on the drivers tab and delete all the HP printer drivers listed there, if any.
  • Delete all the instances of your printer listed in devices and printers.
  • Restart the PC.
  • Once the PC is on the desktop, press Win + R, it would bring a Run dialog box,
  • Type %temp% in the run box and click Ok or hit the Enter button.
  • It would bring up the temporary files folder. Delete the files in the folder (You might not be able to delete all the files, ignore them).
  • If possible, delete the printer from the registries using Regedit or using any other 3rd party application.
  • Restart the PC again.
  • Download the latest full feature driver from www.hp.com/drivers and install it on the computer.
  • Power On/Connect the printer to your computer only when the setup prompts for the printer.

Let me know if this helped.

It is not the printer assistant icon I need, it is the printer icon itself ... the one where I can check ink levels, go into utilities to check my IP address, click on and manage scanner etc. It is on my desktop but will only take me to setup. I do not want or need setup because my printer is connected. I have tried all the trouble shooting. I have tried HP print and scan doctor which no longer works or looks like it did a year or two ago. I can copy fine, I can print fine, I cannot scan because I do not have that icon!

Thanks for the reply, if you do not want to reinstall the printer software on your computer.

You can download and install the HP Scan and Capture app and use it to scan files. Click here

I have reinstalled the printer software at least a dozen times. I get the printer icon on the desktop but it goes to setup mode instead of giving me my utilities and tools page where I check my ink levels, IP address, and can also click on SCAN. I have the HP Scan and Capture app and it does not allow me to save to different folders. It also does not allow me to rotate or change brightness etc. Thanks but I will just get a different brand printer. I have had HP's for years. This lack of help is ridiculous.
