The black ink on my HP Photosmart 5510dB111h printer is not working. All other colors work. I have tried replacing the black ink cartridge, even though it still had plenty of ink according to the printer status. Even with a new cartridge the black ink still does not work for copying or printing jobs. Can I fix this? Or do I have to purchase a new printer??

@JWA3,

Thank you for posting your query on HP Community,

This looks like a possible hardware failure with the printer. However, I would suggest you try these steps here:

Have you tried to print the Print quality diagnostics report from the printer? Or What happens when you try to make a copy from the printer?

Perform a Hard reset on the printer and make sure that the printer is connected directly to the wall outlet and not to the surge protector.

Remove all the ink cartridges and then try to perform a hard reset on the printer.

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

Remove USB cable, if present.

Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.

Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord and then plug back the power cord to the printer.

Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.

Now insert the ink cartridges and then try to print a test page and check if it works.

Print a Print Quality Diagnostics Page to evaluate the print quality. You can use this information to help to troubleshoot print quality issues such as broken lines, faded or missing colors, and streaks.

  1. Follow these steps to print a test page.

  2. Load plain white U.S. letter or A4 size paper in the tray.

  3. From the control panel home screen, touch the Right Arrow (), and then touch the Setup icon ().

  4. Touch Tools, and then touch Print Quality Report. A Print Quality Diagnostic Report prints.

Evaluate the report for any defects.

  • If there are defects found, try the steps mentioned in this document

Alternatively, you can try to check if the old ink cartridges work.

You may try to follow the steps suggested in this document to clean the ink cartridge contact - HP Printers - 'Incompatible Ink Cartridge' or 'Ink Cartridges Missing' Error Displays

You may also try to update the printer firmware - HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

Keep me posted how it goes

Thank you and have a wonderful day
