When my printers are idle for a few minutes they go to sleep. However, they don't wake up when I try to print a document or anything for that matter. I have to switch the  printers off and then on again for it to print. I need the printer to begin printing as soon as I send a document to it.

Further, both printers have a feature which allows me to scan a document and send it to my computer, from the display on the printer. The problem is that there is a perminent error message on my computer whis says that this feature is not available.

I've used HP printers for about 20 years and I've never had so much trouble. I don't want to return the printers but If this matter is not resolved soon, I may have to do just that.

Thanks for your help.

Hi @TerAnne,

I understand you have an issue where the printer will not wake up from sleep mode on your HP OfficeJet 4650 printer. I'll try my best to help you with this,

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

How is the printer connected (USB/Wired/Wireless)?

Error messages - on printer screen and/or computer, any blinking light patterns?

If wireless, when the problem occurs, what is the status of Blue Wireless light on printer, on, off or blinking? –

Hard reset on the printer, router, computer and other devices on the same network.

The following steps temporarily disconnect network and Internet connections and require restarting your computer. Complete any tasks or downloads in progress before continuing.

1. Press the Power button on the printer to turn it off.

2. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

3. Disconnect the power cord from the wireless router.

4. Turn off the computer.

5. Wait for 30 seconds.

6. Reconnect the power cord to the wireless router.

7. Wait for 30 seconds, or until the router is fully on and ready

8. Turn the computer back on.

9. Wait for the computer to reload

10. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.

11. Turn the printer back on.

If you’re running Windows, I would start by checking the installed printer software by downloading and running the HP Print and Scan Doctor. This tool can diagnose and fix many printing and printer software related issues. Please use this link to help you with that information: http://hp.care/2biN2XE

It may sound strange, but set a static IP address for the printer which should help to resolve the issue,

Watch the video to know how to assign a manual IP on HP Printer: http://hp.care/2cqpl6p

Refer this to create a TCP/IP port: http://hp.care/2dxUJQo

For Scanning issue, I would suggest you launch Printer Assistant and then go to Manage Scan and ensure scan to email is enabled.

If the issue persists, I would suggest you would have to uninstall and reinstall the full feature software for the printer.

I hope this helps, let me know how it goes for further assistance. I'll be more than happy to help.

If I have helped you resolve the issue, feel free to give me a virtual high-five by clicking the 'Thumbs Up' icon below,

Followed by clicking on "Accept as solution" from the drop-down menu on the upper right corner,

Thank you for posting in the HP Support Forum.  Have a great day!
