Against my better judgement, I emergency purchased an HP printer last month.  (At least it was on sale).

However, I am finding it will not accept a third party ink cartridge.  Unless there is an answer, I will be violating my self imposed quarantine and return it to Staples.

@WideBody1, Welcome to HP Support Community!

Follow the steps below-

Update the printer firmware

Download available firmware updates from the HP website

With the printer on and connected to the computer, go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads, and then identify your printer. Look for and install any available firmware updates. Refer to the document HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

The third-party ink cartridges will work. But there are many cartridges in the market which are refilled and sometimes the chip is not configured to work with the printer. You need to contact the cartridge manufacturer and find out why it is not working. Try a different cartridge supplier and check if that works.

I hope that answers your concern adequately. Let me know!

I found a solution.   The driver can be downloaded at

https://www.ldproducts.com/firmware-downgrade

Works great now, I am sorry, but I think this is unethical.  If you can't return the printer, download the firmware and DON'T buy HP ink.

I am so done with this crap.   It's a printer.  They are a dime a dozen.   Canon, Brother, Epson, Lexmark, Xerox, Dell and Kodak to name a few.

This is wrong on every level, Dave and Bill are rolling.

This suggestion worked for about 5 pages, then it gave the same error as before, that there was no ink. My finger shows there is plenty of ink in the cartridge. Now it won't work at all, not even in black only mode.

What next?

Same here, I've also put an HP black cartridge, no luck, no black anymore, the printer is a brick.

Hi @matro

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

  • To assist you better, what model printer are you using?
  • Are you still able to print in color?
  • Try making a standalone copy in black and check if that works. By this, we can conclude if this is a hardware or a driver issue.

Keep me posted for further assistance.
