Hi @jegly,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're experiencing issues with your HP printer when trying to send a fax and consistently getting a busy signal or a "no answer" message, there are several things you can check and troubleshoot.

  1. Phone Line Connection:

    • Ensure that the phone line is securely connected to the "1-Line" or "Line" port on the back of the printer.
    • Check for any physical damage to the phone line or connectors.
  2. Phone Line Quality:

    • Verify that the phone line has a clear dial tone. If there's noise on the line, it could interfere with the fax transmission.
    • Try using a different phone line, if available, to rule out issues with the current line.
  3. Fax Settings:

    • Confirm that the fax settings on your HP printer are configured correctly. Check the following settings:
      • Make sure the fax number is entered correctly.
      • Check if the printer is set to "fax" mode.
      • Confirm that the fax resolution and other settings are appropriate.
  4. Fax Number Validity:

    • Verify that the fax numbers you are trying to send to are valid and active. You might want to try sending a test fax to a known working fax machine.
  5. Disable Call Waiting:

    • If you are using a phone line with call waiting, temporarily disable it before sending the fax. Call waiting tones can disrupt the fax signal.
  6. Long-Distance Dialing:

    • For long-distance faxing, ensure that you are adding the appropriate dialing prefix (such as "1" for domestic long-distance) before the fax number.
  7. Fax Speed:

    • Some fax machines support different transmission speeds. Try adjusting the fax speed on your printer to a lower setting to see if that improves the connection.
  8. Firmware/Software Update:

    • Check if there are any firmware or software updates available for your HP printer. Updating the firmware can sometimes resolve compatibility issues.

By systematically checking and addressing these potential issues, you should be able to identify the cause of the problem and, hopefully, resolve the faxing issue with your HP printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
