HP ENVY Photo 7855 All-in-One Printer
iOS

I recently installed a new 6e modem from cable company and the Nest Wifi Pro router with multiple band connectivity so that all my older devices could still use the network.  My HP printers (I have 2 of the 7855 all in one ) both go offline and are unavailable at every new printing session.  I have to restart the network or redo the wireless connection on the printer to get it back online and available.  I shouldn’t have to repeat this every time-  is there a setting that I need to change?  I tried using a static IP, turning off the 5Ghz setting and that didn’t seem to help for long.  Is there new firmware or a different setting that I need?  my other devices are all working, just these 2 printers that constantly are unreliable .  Help!

Hi @AnniePannie1,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP ENVY Photo 7855 printers are struggling to maintain a stable connection with your upgraded network. Here are several troubleshooting steps and settings adjustments that may help resolve the issue.

Update Printer Firmware

  • Ensure both printers are running the latest firmware version. Outdated firmware can sometimes cause connectivity issues with newer routers and modems. You can check for updates via:
    • HP Smart App: Go to the app > Printer Settings > Advanced Settings > Update Printer.
    • HP’s official website: Download the latest firmware for your printer model here.

Assign Static IP Addresses (Verify Settings)

  • It’s good that you tried assigning a static IP. Double-check that the IP is outside the DHCP range to avoid conflicts:
    • Log into your router’s admin panel and reserve IP addresses for the printers.
    • Ensure that both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks are properly distinguished. Since your printers work best on 2.4GHz, ensure they are consistently connecting to this band and not trying to switch to 5GHz.

Disable Dual-Band Steering

  • Disable “band steering” or any setting that automatically switches devices between the 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks. This prevents the printer from jumping between bands, which may cause the offline issue.
  • Set up separate SSIDs for each frequency (e.g., “MyNetwork_2.4GHz” and “MyNetwork_5GHz”) to ensure the printers stay on the 2.4GHz band.

Nest WiFi Router Settings

  • The Nest WiFi Pro router may have some advanced settings that could be adjusted to improve reliability:
    • Enable IPv4 only: Some HP printers may have trouble with IPv6, so try turning off IPv6 on your network.
    • Check for router firmware updates: Since the Nest WiFi is newer, keeping its firmware updated is crucial.
    • Disable Power Save Mode on the router, as this might cut off connectivity to devices when idle.

Use HP Smart App (Cloud Print)

  • If you haven't already, you can try using HP Smart for remote or cloud printing:
    • Set up HP Smart Advance to allow printing through HP’s cloud, which may reduce local network issues.

WiFi Direct or USB Connection (as Backup)

  • If WiFi continues to be unreliable, you can enable WiFi Direct on the printers to bypass the network altogether for direct wireless printing.
  • Alternatively, you can connect the printers via USB to one of your devices, setting up a shared printer in case WiFi fails.

DHCP Lease Time

  • Some routers have settings for DHCP lease time (how long an IP address is assigned to a device). Try increasing the lease time to ensure the IP doesn’t expire too frequently, which could cause the printer to lose connectivity.

Check Printer Sleep Mode

  • Make sure the printer’s Energy-Saving Mode or Sleep Mode is set to a longer duration or turned off, as this can cause the printer to appear offline after periods of inactivity.

After applying these steps, monitor the connection to see if it stabilizes.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Unfortunately, the sleep mode Out is limited to 15 minutes And cannot be turned off. I tried changing it to a static IP, hoping that it wouldn’t keep getting reassigned, but that didn’t work either.

Hi @AnniePannie1,

Thank you for your response,

Here’s a summary of the steps you’ve taken and additional suggestions that may help you further stabilize the connection.

Summary of Your Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Update Printer Firmware: Ensure both printers have the latest firmware via the HP Smart App or the HP website.
  2. Assign Static IP Addresses: Ensure IPs are outside the DHCP range, and check the router settings for conflicts.
  3. Disable Dual-Band Steering: Prevent the printer from switching between 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks by setting separate SSIDs.
  4. Nest WiFi Router Settings:
    • Enable IPv4 only.
    • Check for router firmware updates.
    • Disable Power Save Mode on the router.
  5. Use HP Smart App (Cloud Print): Utilize cloud printing to bypass local network issues.
  6. WiFi Direct or USB Connection: Use WiFi Direct or connect via USB as a backup.
  7. Adjust DHCP Lease Time: Increase lease time to avoid frequent IP expiration.
  8. Check Printer Sleep Mode: Adjust the Energy-Saving Mode or Sleep Mode settings.

Additional Suggestions:

Router Location and Interference:

  • Ensure your router is centrally located and not obstructed by walls or furniture.
  • Minimize interference from other electronic devices (microwaves, cordless phones, etc.) that may affect the WiFi signal.

Printer Reset:

  • As a last resort, you might consider resetting the printers to factory settings and reconfiguring them to ensure there are no lingering issues from previous settings.

Network Configuration:

  • If possible, use a different network channel for your 2.4GHz band. Sometimes, interference on specific channels can cause connectivity issues.

Advanced Printer Settings:

  • Access the printer's embedded web server (by entering the printer’s IP address in a web browser) and review any additional network settings that might affect connectivity.

Monitor Network Traffic:

  • If you have access to router settings, monitor the network traffic to see if there are any unusual spikes or patterns when the printers go offline.

Note:

After implementing these additional suggestions, monitor the printers over a few days to see if the connection stabilizes. The issue may be a combination of factors, and sometimes small adjustments can lead to significant improvements.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
