HP DeskJet 4100e and HP+ and how it works eg billing, ink trial etc

Hi, I Have recently purchased an HP DeskJet 4100e inkjet printer and am quite confused by it all. A friend set it up for me and I am now trying to work out how/what I have joined in order to use it/print? I can see I am in a billing cycle for printing, but do not understand why? Is this something to do with HP+ Smart? I just want a printer, I can print b&W and colour documents, and now realise I may have bought something that is 'greater' than what I need? Any advice, help, thoughts greatly appreciated. Thanks.
