HP LaserJet Pro MFP M225dw

HP LaserJet Pro MFP M225dw.  My laser jet use to print and scan without any issues.  But recently it just stopped printing.  It would send the file to the print queue and show ready to print but nothing happens.  I tried both the wireless direct and a wired connection thru my router.  I ended up sending the pdf file to my iphone and successfully printed it thru wireless direct.  So I believe the problem is with my Mac not communicating correctly with the printer.  I tried to find a new driver off the HP website but then it directs it to some 3rd party (SWHelper) requesting password to change the settings on my computer.  A search on the HP website showed others concerned about allowing access to SWHelper without any definitive resolution.  This is very frustrating that you cannot talk to, chat, or email any customer support at HP.  So frustrated that I am seriously considering purchasing a printer from a different company that will stand behind its product.

So any help with:

1.  Printing off my Macbook Pro.  Is it a driver issue?

2.  Any way to get a driver without going thru SWHelper?

3. Or any other suggestions.

Hi @JMS2323

Welcome to the HP support community.

I understand you're experiencing an issue with your HP device, and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. I'm here to help you today.

I understand how frustrating it can be when your printer suddenly stops working, especially when it seems like the problem lies with your Mac. Here are some steps to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

Remove and Re-add Printer:

  • Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
  • Select your HP LaserJet MFP M225dw and click the - button to remove it.
  • Click the + button to add the printer back. This can refresh the connection and drivers.

Update macOS:

  • Ensure that your macOS is up to date. Sometimes updates include fixes for printing issues. Go to System Preferences > Software Update.

Install Latest Drivers:

  • Go directly to the HP support page Click HERE and search for your printer model. Look for the drivers specific to macOS.
  • If the site directs you to a third party, it's advisable to avoid that link. Instead, check if HP has a dedicated driver download option.

Reset Printing System:

  • In Printers & Scanners, right-click (or Ctrl + click) in the printer list area and select Reset printing system. This will remove all printers and reset the print queue.
  • After resetting, re-add your printer.

Check Firewall/Security Software:

  • Sometimes, firewalls or security software can block communication between your Mac and the printer. Temporarily disable any such software and test printing again.

Use AirPrint:

  • If your printer supports AirPrint, try using that instead of the HP driver. When adding the printer, look for the AirPrint option in the list.

Check for Queue Stuck Jobs:

  • Sometimes, a stuck job in the print queue can cause issues. Make sure there are no jobs that need to be cleared.

To clear the print queue on a Mac, you can use the Printer System Preferences or the Terminal:

Printer System Preferences

  • Open the Apple menu
  • Select System Preferences
  • Select Printers and Scanners
  • Select the printer from the list on the left
  • Click Open Print Queue
  • Select the print jobs to cancel and click the X on the right

Printer Firmware Update:

  • Check if there's a firmware update available for your printer. This can often resolve compatibility issues.

I hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Please click “Accepted Solution” if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.

Yes, I uninstalled the printer on my Mac and re-installed it resulting in an error of "encryption credential expired".  Then followed the instructions from the following post regarding expired certificates and have resolved the printing issue.

I still cannot scan from Preview but I heard it is due to Adobe flash issues that will never be resolved so need to go thru HP Smart to scan?

Thank you for your help!
