HP LaserJet MFP M234sdw Printer

I do not want the printer on the network - between updates and now an upgraded modem - it is not working on the network - it was working fine just connected directly to my mac via USB - however now either the printer updated of MAC OS Ventura updated and the printer is insisting on being connected to the internet - now maybe that is because i also had the endless ink enabled - i have since cancelled that membership thinking that was causing the error.

Is there any way to just use this printer directly connected via a cable?

@sam1187, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Yes, you can still use your HP LaserJet MFP M234sdw via USB only—no internet or network connection required—but a few things may be preventing that from working due to recent updates to either macOS or the printer firmware.

Here’s how to troubleshoot and force the printer to work as a local USB-only device:

Disconnect from Wi-Fi / Network

Make sure your printer is in USB-only mode:

On the printer's control panel, navigate to Network Settings.

Disable Wi-Fi and Ethernet (if applicable).

Make sure it’s not trying to auto-connect to HP Smart or any HP+ services.

Reset the Printing System

This clears out all previous printer configurations:

Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners.

Right-click (or Control-click) in the printer list area.

Choose Reset printing system.

Reboot your Mac.

Reconnect Printer via USB

Plug the printer in via USB.

macOS should auto-detect it.

Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners > Add Printer (+).

You should see the printer listed under USB.

Add it using either the "HP LaserJet MFP M234sdw" driver or Generic PCL if nothing else appears.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
