I have a Laser Jet Professional P 1102w printer for years. Basic problem - I can print to this printer using one HP laptop, but not using another one. The first sees the printer as "ready" to print, whereas the second sees it as "offline". This is a relatively recent problem with the second laptop, as it would print for the first year we had it. Now the mystery -- when I look for the IP address of the printer, it doesn't show up when I run the sequence ipconfig /all, arp -a and nslookup. In other words, the printer is a ghost! Running the Self Test/Device Configuration, it shows the IP address to be 192.168.1.5 I used to be able to directly access the printer using that IP in the search line, revealing several useful settings. However, now, that same IP address seems to have been assigned as a generic IP for routers. Summary - I can print to this printer from one laptop, but it truly is a 'ghost' printer. Any suggestions on how to access the printer using the second laptop? BTW, I tried reinstalling the setup and drivers, even with cable connection from laptop to printer, but the installation stalled out when the cable was connected.

Hi @tbarsto,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you’re dealing with a network issue where your HP LaserJet Pro P1102w printer is accessible from one laptop but not the other. Since the printer shows up as "offline" on the second laptop and is not detectable using common network commands, here are several troubleshooting steps you can follow:
1. Verify Printer Network Connectivity
Check Printer’s Network Settings:
- Ensure that the printer is still connected to your Wi-Fi network.
- Print a Network Configuration Page from the printer to verify the IP address and network settings. Ensure it matches your network and isn’t conflicting with another device.
Ping the Printer IP Address:
- Open Command Prompt on the second laptop and type ping 192.168.1.5 to see if the printer responds. If it doesn’t, the problem might be network-related.
Check Printer's IP Address:
- Ensure that the printer’s IP address hasn’t changed. If it has, update the IP address in your printer settings on the second laptop.
2. Verify Network Configuration on Second Laptop
Check IP Configuration:
- Open Command Prompt and run ipconfig to ensure your laptop is on the same network as the printer. Check for IP address conflicts.
Reset Network Settings:
- Sometimes, resetting network settings can help. Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Status > Network reset and follow the instructions.
3. Reinstall Printer Drivers and Software
Remove Old Printer Drivers:
- Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers, right-click the printer and choose Remove device.
- Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features, and uninstall any HP printer software.
Reinstall Printer:
- Download the latest drivers from the HP website. Ensure you select the correct driver for your operating system.
- During installation, manually enter the IP address when prompted.
4. Configure Printer Port Settings
Add Printer Port:
- Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers > Add a printer > Add a network, wireless, or Bluetooth printer.
- Choose the correct printer from the list or add it manually by selecting The printer that I want isn't listed > Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname and enter the printer's IP address.
Update Port Settings:
- Go to Devices and Printers, right-click the printer and select Printer properties.
- Go to the Ports tab, select Add Port, and choose Standard TCP/IP Port. Enter the IP address and follow the prompts.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Thanks for the suggestions, Rachel571. I've tried most all of them. Currently I did your last one, regarding adding a port. Originally the printer was 'connected' to a TCP/IP in the first place. I reconnected it, and when I 'reconfigure port' it shows the printer with it's original IP, 192.168.1.5 I used to be able to type this IP into the internet search line and it would find the printer and open up several otherwise hidden resources for the printer. Now, however, when I type that IP in, I find that IP address is generically assigned to routers. I wonder, since the printer is relatively old, that the internet field has universally assigned that IP address to routers in general, and thus it is not available for my printer. If true, is the only solution to buy a new printer? Thanks for your help, Rachel571. Tom
