I just purchased the HP smart tank 5100 series and set it up with wireless wifi connection.  Unable to scan .  Keep getting offline error message but the wifi is connected.  restarted with the same issue.

Hi @newnew2,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like there might be an issue with the wireless connection setup of your HP Smart Tank 5100 series printer. Here are some steps you can follow to resolve the "offline" error message:

1. Restart Everything (HP Official Step #1)

Do this in order:

  1. Turn off the printer
  2. Restart your Wi‑Fi router
  3. Restart the device you’re scanning from (phone/computer)
  4. Turn the printer back ON
  5. Wait 1–2 minutes until Wi‑Fi (blue light) becomes solid

If scanning still shows offline, move to the next step.

2. Reset Printer’s Network Settings

This is the most effective fix for 5100-series offline scan errors.

  1. On the printer, press and hold Wireless + Cancel for 3 seconds
  2. The Wi‑Fi light will begin blinking. This means network settings have been restored
  3. The printer is now ready for a fresh setup

3. Reconnect the Printer Using HP Smart (REQUIRED for Scanning)

Scanning uses different network services than printing.
Using the HP Smart app ensures both services are properly initialized.

Steps:

  1. Open HP Smart
  2. Tap Add Printer
  3. Select your Smart Tank 5100
  4. Confirm Wi‑Fi name + password
  5. Press the flashing Information (i) button on the printer when asked
  6. Finish the setup

Try scanning again.

4. Run HP Smart – “Diagnose & Fix” (Windows/Mac)

  1. Open HP Smart
  2. Click Printer Settings
  3. Select Diagnose & Fix
  4. Run the repair

This fixes:

  • Offline printer status
  • Scan service not responding
  • IP address mismatch
  • Windows/Mac firewall blocking scan

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
