Hi @Thirstytrout

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP printer is not printing black ink solidly after replacing the black cartridge, it could be due to a few different issues such as an improper cartridge installation, clogged printheads, or a problem with the new cartridge itself. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can follow to fix the issue:

1. Check Cartridge Installation

Ensure that the black ink cartridge is properly installed in the printer:

  • Turn off the printer and open the cartridge door.
  • Remove and reinstall the black ink cartridge, making sure it clicks into place securely.
  • Check for any protective tape or plastic covers on the new cartridge that may have been left on. These can block the ink flow.

2. Run the Printer’s Cleaning Cycle

Most HP printers have a cleaning function to clear any clogged printheads or ink nozzles, which can be the reason the black ink isn't printing solidly.

To run the cleaning cycle:

  1. Open the printer's control panel and look for the "Tools" or "Maintenance" menu.
  2. Look for an option like "Clean Printhead" or "Clean Ink Cartridges" and select it.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to run the cleaning cycle.
  4. Once the cleaning is finished, print a test page to see if the black ink prints solidly.

Note: If the cleaning cycle does not resolve the issue, you might need to repeat the process once or twice.

3. Check for Ink Flow

If the printheads are clogged, even after cleaning, the ink may not flow properly. You can check the ink flow by printing a test page or diagnostic report directly from the printer.

Steps to check:

  1. Print a diagnostic page: Most HP printers have an option in the settings menu to print a test or diagnostic page that will show ink quality and alignment.
  2. If the black ink appears faint or streaky on the test page, it could indicate clogged nozzles.

4. Align the Printheads

After installing a new cartridge, it’s often necessary to align the printheads to ensure proper ink distribution.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
