My HP printer goes offline and I have to reconnect it to the router every time I want to print. What can be done for the printer to stay online all the time?

Hi @SkladKat

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

That’s frustrating! A printer going offline repeatedly can be caused by network instability, power-saving settings, or outdated drivers.

Let’s go through some steps to keep your HP OfficeJet Pro 8028e online permanently.

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting to Keep Your Printer Online

Step 1: Check the Printer’s Connection

Wi-Fi Connection:

  • Ensure the printer is connected to your Wi-Fi network.
  • On the printer’s control panel, check the wireless icon or network status.
  • If needed, reconnect by going to Settings > Network Setup > Wireless Settings and selecting Wireless Setup Wizard.

USB Connection:

  • If using a USB cable, ensure it’s properly plugged into both the printer and computer.

Ethernet Connection:

  • If using Ethernet, verify the cable is securely connected to the printer and router.

Step 2: Restart Devices

  • Restart your printer, computer, and router.
  • Power off the printer, unplug it for 1 minute, then plug it back in and turn it on.

Step 3: Set Printer as Default

  • On your computer:
    • Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers (Windows) or System Preferences > Printers & Scanners (Mac).
    • Right-click your printer and select Set as Default Printer (Windows) or highlight it and click Default (Mac).

Step 4: Disable Power-Saving Mode

  • Some printers go offline due to power-saving settings.
  • Go to Settings > Power Management and disable Auto-Off or Sleep Mode.

Step 5: Assign a Static IP Address

  • A dynamic IP address can cause connectivity issues. Assigning a static IP ensures the printer stays connected.
  1. Print a Network Configuration Page from the printer’s control panel.
  2. Note the current IP address.
  3. Open a web browser and enter the printer’s IP address to access the Embedded Web Server (EWS).
  4. Navigate to Network > Wireless (or Ethernet) > Manual IP and enter a static IP address.

Step 6: Update Printer Firmware and Drivers

Step 7: Use HP Smart App’s Diagnose & Fix Tool

  • Open the HP Smart App and select Diagnose & Fix to troubleshoot connectivity issues.
