@Swannie25, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you're trying to connect your HP OfficeJet 8012 printer to a new Wi-Fi network, but you're having trouble entering a password that includes an asterisk (*) because the printer's touchscreen keyboard doesn't show that symbol.

Here's how to resolve this:

The printer's touchscreen keyboard may not display all special characters like *, but don't worry, there are a couple of ways to work around this:

Option 1: Use the HP Smart App (Recommended)

You can use the HP Smart app on your smartphone or computer to connect your printer to Wi-Fi. This method allows you to enter the full password, including special characters like *.

Steps:

  1. Download the HP Smart app from the Microsoft Store, Mac App Store, Google Play, or Apple App Store. HP Smart
  2. Open the app and sign in or create an HP account.
  3. Tap “+” to add a new printer.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to connect your printer to the new Wi-Fi network.
  5. When prompted, enter your full Wi-Fi password (including the *).

Option 2: Use the Embedded Web Server (EWS)

If your printer is already connected to any network (even temporarily), you can access its settings via a browser.

Steps:

  1. Print a Network Configuration Page from the printer:
    • On the printer, go to Settings > Reports > Network Configuration Page.
  2. Find the IP address listed on the page.
  3. Open a web browser on your computer and type the IP address into the address bar.
  4. This opens the Embedded Web Server (EWS).
  5. Go to Network > Wireless Setup Wizard and enter your new Wi-Fi credentials, including the *.

Alternative: Change Your Wi-Fi Password

If you're unable to use the HP Smart app or EWS, and the printer absolutely cannot accept the * character via touchscreen, consider temporarily changing your Wi-Fi password (in your router settings) to one without the *, connect the printer, and then change it back after setup using the HP Smart app.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
