Hello HP Community,

My new HP 4158e Printer says that it is disconnected from the internet, however it is connected to my Wifi and it also will not scan documents from the scanner feeder, which is why I purchased it in the first place. My setup was hard, and I have had 2 tickets open with HP Support and have spent countless hours on the phone with them with no success on completing my set up. I Believe it is completed now since I found the printer claim code, but my hp account says it is ready to print with a green light and disconnected   from the internet with a red light. I keep trying to connect it to my WIFi when I see the name of the printer by using my password, but it keeps saying incorrect password, when I know it is the correct password. I would appreciate any help from help from the HP community. Thanks in advance!

Hi @Renee824, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It definitely sounds like your HP 4158e printer🖨️ is presenting a double-whammy of challenges – Wi-Fi that keeps dropping and a scanner feeder that's refusing to feed! Let's break down these issues and address them one by one with methodical approach. Imagine we're detectives, carefully examining every clue to solve these printer puzzles! 🕵️‍♀️ Let's get your HP 4158e working smoothly and reliably again! 🖨💻😊

Confirm Printer Connectivity to Wi-Fi

Print a Network Configuration Page:

  • Press the Wireless button and Information button together on the printer.
  • Look for Connection Status and Signal Strength.
  • Check the IP Address assigned to the printer.

Verify on Router Interface:

  • Log in to your router settings (usually at 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1).
  • Look for Connected Devices and confirm if the printer appears there.
  • If the printer is connected but not responding, restart your router.

Reconnect the Printer Using HP Smart

Forget the Existing Connection:

  • On the printer, press and hold the Wi-Fi button for 5 seconds until it starts blinking.
  • Go to HP Smart App on your phone or PC.
  • Click Add a Printer, select your printer, and follow the setup instructions.

Manually Assign IP Address (If Needed):

  • If the network page from Step 1 shows an IP, open a web browser and enter the printer's IP address.
  • In Settings > Network, change to a Static IP Address.
  • Assign a manual IP (e.g., 192.168.1.100).

Fix Wi-Fi Password Issue

  • If the printer keeps rejecting the correct password, try:
    1. Restarting your router and printer.
    2. Checking Wi-Fi frequency: The HP 4158e only supports 2.4GHz networks.
    3. Ensuring your password doesn’t have special characters (!@#$%^&*()).
    4. Using Guest Wi-Fi with a simple password to test connection.

Fix Scanner Feeder Not Working

Update Printer Firmware:

  • In HP Smart, go to Printer Settings > Advanced Settings.
  • Look for Firmware Update and update if available.

Check Document Feeder:

  • Make sure papers are properly aligned and not folded.
  • Open the scanner lid and clean the paper path rollers.

Test Scanning via HP Smart:

  • Open HP Smart and try scanning using Scanner Feeder mode.
  • If it doesn't work, try the Windows Scan App (Windows Key + Scan).

If issues persist, try a factory reset:

Press Wireless + Cancel button together for 5 seconds.
Restart the printer and set up from scratch.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day. ☀️📄😊
