I bought a HP 6145e printer for my granddaughter on Amazon. It is connected to the WiFi but it won’t print. It keeps asking for a password and we have no idea of how to find the password. We assigned no password when it was set up. To me, this is a serious flaw in the design of this printer. It should not be this complicated. Please help.

Hi @Cubby44,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP 6145e printer is asking for a Wi-Fi Direct password, which is a common issue when trying to print directly from a device without going through the network. Here's how you can find or reset the password for your HP printer:
Steps to Find or Reset the Wi-Fi Direct Password
Access the Printer Control Panel:
- Make sure the printer is powered on and connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your devices.
Print the Network Configuration Page:
- On your printer's control panel, navigate to the Wireless or Network settings.
- Look for an option to print the Network Configuration Page or Wireless Network Test Report.
- This page will contain information about your Wi-Fi Direct connection, including the SSID (network name) and password.
Check the Wi-Fi Direct Settings:
- On some HP printers, you can directly view the Wi-Fi Direct settings from the control panel.
- Navigate to Settings > Network Setup > Wi-Fi Direct Settings.
- Here, you can see the Wi-Fi Direct password. If you don’t see the option directly, look for sub-menus like Network or Wireless.
Using HP Smart App:
- If you have the HP Smart app installed on your smartphone or computer, open the app and select your printer.
- Go to Printer Settings > Wi-Fi Direct. Here, you should be able to see or reset the Wi-Fi Direct password.
Resetting the Printer Network Settings:
- If you are unable to find the password using the above methods, you may need to reset the printer's network settings.
- To reset the network settings, navigate to Settings > Network Settings > Restore Network Defaults. Confirm the reset when prompted.
- After resetting, you will need to reconnect the printer to your Wi-Fi network.
Manual Configuration:
- If none of the above steps work, you can manually configure the Wi-Fi Direct settings through the Embedded Web Server (EWS).
- To access the EWS, find the printer's IP address from the Network Configuration Page. Enter this IP address into your web browser.
- In the EWS, navigate to the Network or Wireless settings, and look for Wi-Fi Direct. Here, you can configure the SSID and password.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
