Hello: I recently was gifted a HP 9020 printer that had been configured on a Wired Network. I attempted to configure it on my wireless network, but there is no "Wireless" settings in the Menu Setup Screen. Therefore, I attempted to use HP Smart and also HP Assistant to configure the printer via an Ethernet connection to my wired network. It cannot find (or does not recognize) the wired network, although the ethernet cable is active and live (I tested it). Therefore, the only way that I can connect to the printer is using a USB connection with my laptop. I have tried everything that I can think of, except restore the printer to the original factory settings. But, I cannot even do that because there is no "Tools" icon on the menu screen. However, under Printer Maintenance/Advanced there is a "Backup/Restore" option, but it is asking for a file location and PIN, neither of which I know or even can figure out where to find. The best option now is a factory reset, but I don't know how to do it since the only connection I have to the printer that seems to work is a USB cable. Please help! Thanks.

Hi @cbussey,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're having a complex issue with configuring your HP OfficeJet Pro 9020, especially with switching from a wired to a wireless network. Since you’re having trouble accessing the wireless settings and performing a factory reset through the usual menus, here's a step-by-step guide to help you troubleshoot and reset your printer:
1. Perform a Hard Reset
Before diving into factory reset methods, try a hard reset of the printer. This can sometimes resolve issues with network settings and the display menu:
- Turn off the Printer: Press the power button to turn off the printer.
- Unplug the Printer: Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer and from the power outlet.
- Wait: Leave it unplugged for about 60 seconds.
- Reconnect and Power On: Plug the power cord back in, reconnect it to the outlet, and turn on the printer.
2. Factory Reset Using Buttons
Since you can connect to the printer via USB, you can use the button-based method to perform a factory reset:
- Turn Off the Printer: Ensure the printer is turned off.
- Press and Hold Buttons: Press and hold both the Wireless and Cancel buttons simultaneously.
- Turn On the Printer: While holding the buttons, turn on the printer. Continue holding the buttons until the printer starts initializing.
- Release Buttons: Release the buttons when the printer begins its startup routine.
If this method doesn’t work, try this alternative:
- Turn On the Printer: Turn on the printer.
- Open the Front Panel: Access the printer’s control panel.
- Locate the Reset Option: Look for a reset option in the menu if available. Since you mentioned not seeing "Tools," it’s possible this might not be visible if the display is not fully functional.
3. Network Setup Using HP Smart
If the printer’s display menu is unresponsive or lacking options, use HP Smart to try setting up the network:
- Connect via USB: Ensure the printer is connected to your laptop via USB.
- Install HP Smart: Download and install the HP Smart app from the HP website or your device’s app store.
- Add the Printer: Open the HP Smart app and select "Add Printer." Follow the on-screen instructions to add your OfficeJet Pro 9020.
- Set Up Wireless: Once the printer is added, use the HP Smart app to configure the wireless settings. It should guide you through the process of connecting the printer to your Wi-Fi network.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
