HP Officejet Pro 6978

I am getting an error message when trying to fax.  I have faxed from this printer before.  I've connected to the wall jack and the back of the printer, and I've double checked the fax phone number to use.  I've reset the printer.  When I tried to get online help I was told my warranty had expired but was not not given any other options than the help page which I went through and finally tried this.  Can someone please help.

Hi @Rowebuck,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you've already taken several troubleshooting steps, which is great. Let's try a few more to see if we can resolve the issue.

  • Check Phone Line Connection: Ensure that the phone line is securely plugged into both the wall jack and the back of the printer. Sometimes a loose connection can cause issues.
  • Test Phone Line: Try using the phone line with a regular telephone to ensure there's a dial tone and that you can make outgoing calls. If there are any issues with the phone line itself, it might affect faxing.
  • Check Fax Settings: Make sure that the fax settings on your printer are configured correctly. Verify the fax number, country/region settings, and any other relevant settings.
  • Check Fax Memory: Check if there are any pending faxes in the printer's memory. If the memory is full, it might prevent new faxes from being sent or received. You can usually find an option to view and clear the fax memory in the printer's menu or settings.
  • Update Firmware/Software: Ensure that your printer's firmware and software are up-to-date. Sometimes, updating the firmware can resolve compatibility issues or bugs that may be causing problems with faxing.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, there might be a hardware problem with your printer's fax functionality.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
