HI @JoWTF,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
On the Printer:
- Touch the Wireless icon on the printer's control panel.
- Go to Settings > Wireless Setup Wizard.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to select your Wi-Fi network and enter the password.
Using HP Smart App:
- Open the HP Smart app on your iMac.
- Click the + (plus) sign to add a new printer.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to connect the printer to your Wi-Fi network.
5. Verify Connection
- Once the printer is connected to the Wi-Fi network, print a Wireless Network Test Report to ensure the connection is successful.
- Go to Setup > Reports > Network Configuration Report.
6. Update Printer Firmware.
- Visit the HP Support website.Search for your printer model (HP OfficeJet Pro 6978) and download any available firmware updates.Follow the instructions to update your printer’s firmware.
7. Check Router Settings.
- SSID Broadcasting: Make sure your network name (SSID) is visible.
- 2.4 GHz Band: Ensure your router is broadcasting on the 2.4 GHz band, as many printers do not support the 5 GHz band.
- MAC Address Filtering: If MAC address filtering is enabled on your router, add your printer’s MAC address to the allowed list. The MAC address can be found on the printer’s network configuration report.
8. Firewall and Security Settings
- Sometimes, firewall settings can block the communication between your printer and the network.
- Ensure your firewall is not blocking the printer.
- Temporarily disable the firewall and try reconnecting the printer.
9. Reinstall Printer Drivers
- On your iMac, go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
- Select your printer and click the - (minus) button to remove it.
- Re-add the printer by clicking the + (plus) button and follow the instructions to install the latest drivers.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
