Unable to print with my HP Officejet Pro 8610 printer via Google wifi

macOS 10.15 Catalina

I am unable to print to my HP Officejet Pro 8610 printer via wifi from my mac.  The wifi network just has a single AC2200 Google Nest router. The printer is connected to Wifi with a valid IP address (196.168.86.31). Printing worked with my old non-google wifi setup. I tried removing and then reinstalling the printer to the printer list on my mac. The mac was aware of the printer (it listed the printer in the list of possible devices to add) but when I tried to add it I got the error message "Unable to connect to 'HP Officeject Pro 8610 [1ED6EE]._ipp._tcp.local.' due to an error."

I talked to a Google representative who says that it looks the problem is that the printer can only communicate on the wifi 2.4 GHz band while the mac is defaulting to the 5 GHz band so the two cannot see one another. There is apparently no way to force the mac to connect to the wifi on the 2.4 GHz band (it is a "feature" of the Nest router).

Question: Is there anything I can do to get wifi printing other than replace router or printer? If I do have to replace something it will be the printer. Anyone know of any lists of printers compatible with Nest?

@DavidOfIthaca, Welcome to HP Support Community!

You cannot tweak the printer to work with the 5GHz network, the only way out is to replace the printer.

I may have a few pointers/suggestions to help you out, however, since these suggestions are limited to you and your printer alone, I'd like to send out a private message with those details.
