My HP Deskjet 2875 doesn't seem to auto-off and I'm guessing it's because the wifi direct is always on since it's symbol always present even though the regular wifi symbol goes away when the printer goes to sleep. I trying to understand wifi direct is doing. Therefore, I want to know why does it always need to be on even if the printer's regular wifi turns off in sleep? Are wifi and wifi direct working together? Why doesn't the wifi direct also turn off after a while so the printer can auto sleep?

Also, when I print from the printer using my phone or laptop am I using the wifi or wifi direct?

Hi @MarioDF

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Apologies for any confusion—Wi-Fi Direct and regular Wi-Fi serve different purposes, which explains why Wi-Fi Direct remains active even when the printer enters sleep mode.

Understanding Wi-Fi Direct vs. Regular Wi-Fi

  • Wi-Fi Direct allows devices to connect directly to the printer without needing a router.
  • Regular Wi-Fi connects the printer to a network via a router, enabling printing from multiple devices on the same network.

Why Does Wi-Fi Direct Stay On?

  • Wi-Fi Direct is designed to always be available for direct connections.
  • Unlike regular Wi-Fi, it doesn’t rely on a router, so it remains active even when the printer sleeps.
  • Some HP printers do not turn off Wi-Fi Direct automatically, which may prevent Auto-Off from functioning.

Are Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct Working Together?

  • They operate independently—Wi-Fi Direct allows direct printing, while regular Wi-Fi enables network printing.
  • If your device is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the printer, you’re using regular Wi-Fi.
  • If your device connects directly to the printer’s Wi-Fi Direct network, you’re using Wi-Fi Direct.

Can Wi-Fi Direct Be Turned Off?

  • Some HP printers allow manual disabling of Wi-Fi Direct:
    • Go to Settings > Network Setup > Wi-Fi Direct and turn it Off.
    • If this option isn’t available, Wi-Fi Direct may be permanently enabled on your model.
