@diane311, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand how confusing it can be when your HP printer shows as offline, especially when your internet and dial tone are working fine. Don’t worry, I’ll guide you step-by-step to get your printer back online.
Here are some steps to try:
Check Printer Connection
- For Wi-Fi Printers: Make sure your printer is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your computer.
- On the printer control panel, go to Network Settings > Wireless Settings > Wireless Setup Wizard and reconnect to your Wi-Fi.
- For USB Printers: Ensure the USB cable is securely connected to both the printer and your computer.
Set Printer to "Online" Manually (Windows)
- On your PC, go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
- Right-click your HP printer and select See what’s printing.
- In the new window, click Printer in the top menu.
- If Use Printer Offline is checked, click it to uncheck it.
Restart Print Spooler Service
- Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
- Scroll down and find Print Spooler.
- Right-click it and choose Restart.
Reinstall or Update Printer Drivers
- Visit the official HP support page: Official HP® Support
- Enter your printer model and download the latest drivers.
- Install them and restart your computer.
Note on the "Dial Tone" Mention
If you’re hearing a dial tone or suspect someone is calling, it might be unrelated to the printer. HP printers don’t use phone lines unless they have fax functionality. If your printer has a fax feature, make sure the phone line is connected only if you're using fax, and check that Auto Answer is turned off if not needed.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
