Hi @Illereichen

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand that dealing with printer issues can be frustrating, especially when it seems like everything is malfunctioning at once. Don't worry—I’ll walk you through some simple steps to troubleshoot the HP OfficeJet Pro 8715 and help get it working again.

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting Guide

1. Check the Power Supply

  • Is the printer powered on? Make sure the printer is properly plugged into a working power outlet and that the power cable is securely connected.
  • If the printer is not turning on at all, try unplugging the printer from the power source, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in.

2. Check for Error Messages or Lights

  • Look at the printer's display screen for any error messages or flashing lights. These can sometimes give clues about the issue.
  • If there’s a specific error code, you can look it up on HP's support website to find more detailed information.

3. Perform a Hard Reset

A hard reset can sometimes resolve strange issues:

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Unplug the printer from the power source.
  3. Wait for 30 seconds and then plug the printer back in.
  4. Turn the printer back on.

4. Check the Ink Cartridges

  • Open the printer and make sure the ink cartridges are seated properly. Sometimes, if the cartridges are not installed correctly, the printer won’t function.
  • If any of the ink cartridges are low or empty, replace them with new ones.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi Sheha_01

Thank you for your comment.  I did all the actions you recommended.  The printer was on, so was the WLAN sign.  Fortunately, a IT minded visitor kindly had a look today and after much trying and testing, he found out that the black toner cartridge (alternative brand) that I installed recently, had a differently shaped contact thing (sorry I don't know it's proper name).  After I installed a new HP toner cartridge, it resumed printing.  So this problem is solved.

However, another one is left after all this, which is that I cannot print duplex anymore from Windows applications (which is most times), I keep having to turn the pages over every time.  If I print pdf or on the internet, there is a different printing menu and then it works ok.  Would you know why and what setting has been upset?  Thank you, take care.

Hi @Illereichen,

Thank you for your response, I'm glad to hear the toner cartridge issue was resolved! Now, regarding the duplex printing issue, it sounds like a printer setting or a software setting has been changed. Here's how you can troubleshoot and get duplex printing working again:

1. Check the Printer Settings in Windows

  • Open the Control Panel and go to Devices and Printers (or Printers & Scanners on Windows 10/11).
  • Right-click on the HP OfficeJet Pro 8715 printer and select Printer Properties.
  • Go to the Printing Preferences tab.
  • Look for a section called Duplex Printing or Print on Both Sides (this could vary depending on the software version).
  • Ensure that Two-Sided (Duplex) is selected and click Apply.

2. Check Application-Specific Print Settings

  • In applications like Word, Excel, or PDF viewers, the print settings can be different from the default system settings.
  • When printing from these programs, always check the Print dialog box:
    • Click on File > Print.
    • Look for Properties or Preferences and ensure Duplex Printing is enabled for that document.
  • If this option is grayed out or not showing, try updating the printer drivers or reinstalling the printer software.

3. Update or Reinstall Printer Drivers

  • Outdated drivers can sometimes cause printing issues.
  • Visit HP's official website and download the latest drivers for the HP OfficeJet Pro 8715.
  • After updating, restart your computer and printer, then try printing with duplex again.

4. Check Windows Printer Settings

  • Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners.
  • Click on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8715, then click Manage.
  • Check the Printing Preferences again and ensure that duplex printing is set as the default.

5. Reset the Printer Settings

  • If nothing seems to work, you can reset the printer’s settings:
    • On the printer's control panel, go to Setup > Restore Defaults.
    • Be aware that this will reset all settings, so you may need to reconfigure the Wi-Fi and other preferences.

6. Check for Firmware Updates

  • Sometimes, an outdated firmware version can cause issues like this.
  • Go to the HP Support website and check if there's a firmware update available for your printer model.
