I'm having trouble with my Officejet Pro 8500. Recently replaced the black ink cartridge (and have replaced the colors as well) but the black doesn't seem to want to print. I've use the cleaning printhead cycle and it will last for a couple of pages but then goes back to skipping. And even when I've left it printing nicely when I come back the next time to use it, it's gone again. Any suggestions or help? I'm extremely frustrated!

You are not alone.
I went through this recently and was amazed at how many people (HP people included) did not have an answer.
Finally, I bought a new printhead for the black/yellow section and it is printing again. It is maddening that there is no sensor that could easily have told me that that was the problem.
The Best Buy Geek Squad guy said that it will only last for 6-9 months and it'll happen again. So, $60 gets me another 6-9 months.
I tell ya this much, I'll never spend a lot of money on an HP printer again because they are built to last only so long. No use in spending the money if something as small as a printhead exchange can get you goin again but HP won't tell you that.
I thought having to buy all the color cartridges was maddening enough...this tops it.

I bought an OfficeJetPro 8500 I guess 2 years ago, liked it and its features. I don't print a lot, but tend to scan documents more than anything else, so it took a while for me to get to the point where I ran out of ink; I had ignored the low ink warnings until the other night, when I NEEDED to print a spreadsheet. I attempted to make the printer print in B&W as well as grey scale, nope, the printer wanted me to add new color cartridges, which HP could sell me. I tried a number of different approaches but ended up wasting a fair amount of time attempting to get the printer to print. No printing at all unless the color ink cartridges were replaced, not even in black & white. I see onlne on the HP support page that I am not the only one with this issue and it quickly became obvious that HP does not make products that can be relied upon any more and that cooperate greed at the expense of the customer seems to be way of business for HP. I had to email the spreadsheet to myself for printing elsewhere so much for having a home printer. I have since instituted a "fix" that allows me to print regardless of ink levels. The printer is going on to craigslist this Friday if you'd like to buy it back. I will be carefully researching a non-HP replacement. I recommend a lot of products to various companies and "groups" and cannot recommend HP any longer. I never realized the greed with which your company operates.

Welcome to the HP Support Forums! I see by your post, that the black isn't printing. I would like to help you out today.
I have provided a couple of documents that you can try, to see if they will help.
Here is a document to check the cartridges. I would clean the contacts on them also.
I have provided this document for manually cleaning the printheads.
Are you using Genuine HP Cartridges?
Check the date on the cartridges to make sure they are still in warranty. (not old stock)
What are the ink levels?
If the printhead and the printer are out of warranty, you could try these steps to soak the printhead. Please use at your own discretion. If you determine that the printhead is the cause, you can purchase a replacement printhead for your printer or service the printer from HP, How To Flush Out A Clogged HP 940 or 88 Printhead.
