C310A Printer - new ink but nothing prints

A friend has an HP C310A printer.  It worked fine until it ran out of ink. He replaced the ink cartridges and now nothing prints.  We checked the printer, it shows that the ink is full on all cartridges.  If we put the old cartridges back in, it shows them as empty.   If he does a test page, he gets a little black text and a little cyan, but nothing else.  We tried aligning the print heads, from the printer touch screen and it failed. We rebooted, double checked the cables (USB connect) and it indicates there is plenty of ink, but it prints blank pages.   It does this from either the pc print or the touch screen print.

I physically checked the new ink and there appears to be ink in all of the cartridges.   According to the pc diagnostics, all should be fine.

We tried a 2nd set of ink cartridges and still nothing. Any suggestions?  This printer is only a month and a half old.

any suggestions would be appreciated.
