Can I use previously installed Ink cartridges in my new printer:

I have a Photosmart 6520 All in One printer. Just replaced all the cartridges and then printer quit working. Purchased a refurbished 6520 from HP but instructions said only to use the cartridges that came with the printer for initial set up. The cartridges say "setup" on each cartridge. The HP salesperson said the printer would come with new ink cartridges so my intent was to not use the new cartridges. keep them sealed and use the cartridges that I had just opened and inserted in the old printer.

My question: When the "setup" cartridges run out of ink, can I used the cartridges from the old 6520 printer?

Short answer, yes.  You must use the setup cartridges first.  Once done you should be able to use the other ones.
