Can I use the black ink cartridge only, & quit replacing the color cartridge when it's empty?

I'm also very disapointed that I can't print black ink only and am forced to purchase colored ink in ALL colors.  After the printer indicated I was out of magenta only, but still had some of the other colors, I puchased only magenta.  After replacing the one empty cartridge, the printer now tells me another color is empty - a second trip to the store for the other two colors if I want to print something with the black ink that I have .

HP didn't do this with their older printers, this is poor business practice.  HP should concentrate on selling quality products not gouging people on ink.  I will use this printer for scanning and purchase a different printer (not HP), black & white only for my printing needs.

As I'm about to purchase a new computer this does not give me a good feeling about HP products in general.

Can I use the black ink cartridge only, & quit replacing the color cartridge when it's empty?

HP and other printer manufacturers have different printer technologies for different needs.  For inkjet printers:

    • Some have printheads built into the ink cartridges.  These printers can typically print with one or more of the colors completely empty, or even with color or black (but not both) cartridges removed. The Deskjet 6980 series is an example, or for an all-in-one see the Deskjet 2540 or the Officejet 8040a.
    • Other printers have separate ink supplies and replaceable printheads.  An example would be the Officejet 7110 printer.  The printhead in these printers can be replaced if they are damaged by running the printhead with colors out.  Some of these printers will allow printing with a color out, other will not.  If the printer is run without ink in one or more colors the printer may be damaged, but the user may be able to recover without having to send the printer for service.
    • ">Other printers have permanent printheads.  To run these without some ink in all the colors would risk causing damage to the printhead due to clogs, air ingested in the printhead or burned out printhead firing resistors. The Officejet 6700 is an example of this type of printer. For printers with fixed printheads this could require service to get the printer to print properly again when the ink is finally replaced.

The document here describes how ink is used.  While the document is written for HP Inkjet printers the same principles apply to inkjet printers from other manufacturers.

If you never print in color a laser printer would likely be a better choice.  If you occasionally print color but mostly black an IPH printer like those in the first category above may be a good choice.

I have an HP Officejet 6210 all in one printer that takes color ink (#95) and black ink (#94).   I only want to print in black and white.   The color cartridges are more expensive and since I don't want to use them, I don't want to replace it.  Can I have the printer bypass the color cartridge (and the notifications that come with an emply cartridge) so it will allow me to use the black cartridge (#94) only and let the #95 sit there empty?  (ie it tries to print from there and I get the blank sheets...want to default it to the black ink cartridge 100% of time.)  I waste too much money on ink and wish to use the cheaper cartridge (#94) always.

'levity'.  Is there an 'app' for that?  Somebody has the knowledge to create a software 'fix' that asks/ prompts the user for 'use black ink only' when color cartridges are empty... put this 'prompt' to allow 'continue printing' on this screen/ software

using printer preferences (grayscale only) setting, doesn't work.

Somebody, maybe

-'ANONYMOUS' can help US with a company holding it's consumers hostage.. demanding WE pay a ransom to use a product we already paid for... or,

- a 3rd party ink producer who can create a cartridge that ALWAYS appears full, to the machine, allowing us to proceed using only BLACK INK
