Can my printer print BLACK without my COLOR CARTRIDGES running out?

As the Microsoft tech pointed out, you don't avoid maintenance ink usage. No one said it is performed with every print run. There are sensors and decisionmaking going on depending on the state of the printheads.

Can my printer print BLACK without my COLOR CARTRIDGES running out?

[I am not a tech and I do not work for Microsoft or HP or anyone ....]

The servicing routines are dependant on a number of things, including the time since the last print job.  Some printers may adjust based on environmental factors such as temperature and humidity.  The document here discusses how ink is used, the discussion there is about HP printers but similar applies to any inkjet printer.

Typically there will be servicing done before, during, and after each print job.

Can my printer print BLACK without my COLOR CARTRIDGES running out?

I have the same problem with my 7510 series. Why does it need all cartridges to print black. Luckily I have an old printer and it prints perfectly well with a black only cartridge. This has become my printer of choice. Unles there is a solution to this problem it will be the last HP printer I ever buy. Any solutions???

Simple: MAINTENANCE ink. Most printers out there use it.

Can my printer print BLACK without my COLOR CARTRIDGES running out?

HP and other printer manufacturers have different printer technologies for different needs.

      • Some have printheads built into the ink cartridges.  These printers can typically print with one or more of the colors completely empty, or even with color or black (but not both) cartridges removed. The PSC 1210 series is an example.
      • Other printers have separate ink supplies and replaceable printheads.  An example would be the Photosmart 7510 printer.  The printhead in these printers can be replaced if they are damaged by running the printhead with colors out.  Some of these printers will allow printing with a color out, other will not.  If the printer is run without ink in one or more colors the printer may be damaged, but the user may be able to recover without having to send the printer for service.
      • Other printers have permanent printheads.  To run these without some ink in all the colors would risk causing damage to the printhead due to clogs, air ingested in the printhead or burned out printhead firing resistors. The Photosmart 6510 series is an example of this type of printer. For printers with fixed printheads this could require service to get the printer to print properly again when the ink is finally replaced.

The document here describes how ink is used.  While the document is written for HP Inkjet printers the same principles apply to inkjet printers from other manufacturers.

Thanks for your response but I would think there is a design flaw in the printer. With the high cost of ink cartridges people are going to run out of ink sometimes. If the print head is damaged by doing this then clearly there is a flaw.

This may be what has happened to my printer - the ink status is showing a full cartridge but on a test print it prints nothing for that cartridge. I tried a new cartridge but it is still not working. I imagine the cost of a service would make it viable to buy a printer of another brand instead. Someone earlier mentioned a Samsung as a preferable alternative.

So the final question remains. Is there anyway to clear a print head (the print ink status is showing the cartidge as full) without returning the printer. I have tried using the "clean" function on the menu.

The printer will protect the printheads by blocking printing when the ink runs out.  When the ink is low there will be a warning message, when the supply is actually depleted the printer will block printing and properly cap the printhead to prevent drying.

If the issue is that all the cartrdiges have ink but one or more are not printing properly for your Photosmart 7520 then I would suggest the troubleshooting steps in the document here.  If the steps there do not resolve the issue the post here may help.

I was merely referring to your response as the guy with the Microsoft certification, not as an employee of MIcrosoft.
