MFP M177
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I've had a MFP 177 for years.  I can connect to it and scan in Linux without issues.  In Windows, the HP supplied sofware is incapable of finding the printer even when I try supplying a static IP.  I have tried the latest software from HP as well as the "smart" install from the printer's built in web server.  I have no connectivity issues.  I can add the printer in windows, and connect to it, but I can't run the crappy installer to get the scanner drivers.

Currently, the useless web services are disabled.  If I try to enable them, I get a message stating the printer can't connect to the internet.  I don't want the printer to connect to the internet at all.  That doesn't help me.  I just want to be able to connect to my printer/scanner on my own secure network.

Hello, @WheresMyISO – Hope you are well 🙂

I understand you are having trouble installing the scan drivers for your LaserJet printer on the Windows 10 machine. Let’s try the steps below to do a clean install:

  • First, unplug the USB cable from the printer if present.
  • Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP LaserJet printer entries and uninstall them.
  • Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
  • Press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" (There is a space between .exe & /) and press enter.
  • Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
  • Again, go to the Run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Now click http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/LES/M177/Color_LJPro_MFP_M177_full-solution_16259.exe to install the software.
  • Connect the USB cable if prompted and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

That should help, but if the issue persists, try using the HP Scan and Capture to scan. You can download it here: http://bit.ly/2oAYXby

Those steps should do the trick, let me know the outcome!

Good luck 🙂

The printer is connected on my network.  I am not connected via USB.

I can easily browse to the printer's static IP in a web browser and view the details there.

The installer does not see my printer at all and refuses to continue.

The "advanced" troubleshooting ends at:

"Or, try opening the embedded Web server to verify that the computer is communicating with the product."

It doesn't say what to do after that if the software won't install.

I opened up the scan program in Ubuntu and had no problems scanning from the device.  The Windows drivers simply refuse to install.

Hello, @WheresMyISO

Did you try using the HP Scan and Capture app?

Try to perform the steps below to install the printer drivers:

·         Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP LaserJet printer entries and uninstall them.

·         Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.

·         Restart your computer.

·         Click the bottom-left Start button on desktop, type device manager in the search box and tap Device Manager on the menu.

·         Once in device manager, click on the view tab in the top & choose “Show hidden devices”.

·         Then from the device manager list, check the entries under “Printer”  – If there are any entries, please right click and choose “uninstall” – In the confirm device un-install pop-up, make sure you select the box which says “Delete the driver software for this device".

·         Also, check the entries under "printer queue" and "imaging devices" and repeat the same exercise. Delete any printer entry or any entry which says “Unknown device”.

·         Once done, close device-manger. Then press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" (there is a space between .exe & /) and press enter.

·         Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.

·         Again, go to run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.

·         Open run again, type “%temp%” and press enter to get the temporary files. Delete all the files here. Skip the items which cannot be deleted.

·         Now restart your computer again.

·         Open the Run window again, type “services.msc” and press ok to get services window.

·         Scroll down to “Remote Procedure Call (RPC)” – right-click and go to properties. Make sure the service is started and startup type is “Automatic”.

·         Now scroll up and go to “Function Discovery Provider Host” – right-click and select properties – Change the startup type to “manual” and start the service.

·         Repeat the same exercise on “Function Discovery Resource Publication” as well.

·         Now click http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/LES/M177/Color_LJPro_MFP_M177_full-solution_16259.exe to install the software.

Let me know if that helps!

Cheers 🙂

Finally got Windows to see it by disabling IPV6 on and DHPV6 on the printer from the web browser interface.

I installed the scan and capture app, but knew it would fail before I did because it specifically says you need to have the drivers installed.

If HP just released a set of drivers with .inf files instead of a monolithic installer that doesn't work, this would've been done in 5 minutes.
