This worked for me, as well.
But...what caused the (presumably erroneous) update notification in the first place and why couldn't we recover from the mess it created using normal techniques?
I'm concerned that this problem may recur. What assurances can HP give us that it won't?
Someone else (presumably Shane_R) marked this as the Solution. Until explanations and assurances are given, I don't feel comfortable endorsing this as the Solution. Thanks.

... I do not like that the scanner icon is inside the printer utility as opposed to before being a standalone icon on my desktop but hey, I am happy everything is working. ...
Sunstar1, the scanner icon showed up for me in the Start Menu...All Programs...HP...HP Photosmart Plus B210 series...HP Scan. I then just created a desktop shortcut for it. Hope this helps !!

I've also discovered that when I go into Devices and Printers and open my Photosmart, the "basic" page still appears, not the Printer Assistant, although Printer Assistant IS available as an icon there.

I am having the same issue - only basic drivers work. In fact the full drivers were successfully installed previously but one of the icons recently stopped working - only basic drivers were working. I had installed version 22.5.0 that shipped with my printer. I VERY STRONGLY dislike the newest verision which opens to occupy a very large amount of real estate on my screen.
I suspect my version 22.5.0 stopped working correctly because of either (a) some windows update or (b) McAfee antivirus or firewall or (c) due to cleaning of registery with McAfee quick clean.
Anyone have any new insights on this issue? Had anyone been able to get version 22.5.0 working again?
