Chattering Noise

HP Recommended

Good day, all -

Upon start-up, my Officejet j4550 All-in-One has begun to make a chattering noise.

It seems, at least to me, to be coming from the belt that moves the ink cartridges.

This condition persists even though I close and reopen several times.

How can I cure this malady??

Hi ebtdad,

I understand you have an Officejet J4550 that is making a chattering noise when trying to print. I will certainly do my best to assist you with this.

I would recommend you follow through this 'Carriage Jam-Open print carriage access door. Clear Jam, and then press OK' Message Displays on the... document as the steps within should assist you in looking for any obstructions that could be causing a noise.

Hope this helps, have a great day!!

Good day, Ms. Terrill -

Thanks for your prompt and kind help.

However, your suggested "fix" did not work.

First, I could not see any obstruction in the

carriage mechamism.  So, I manually moved

the print cartridges assembly back to the

left from where they were in the little box

for them at the far right. That sure didn't help.

Second, your "fix"  seems to have exacerbated

my problem; in that there now are even longer

"clunking"( "chattering") sounds from my Officejet

J4550 printer.

Please discuss this problem with an HP Tech.

What do they say? "Two heads are better than one."

Finally, if you wish to call me, my number is

424/273-6738. My eMail address is ebtdad1@gmail.com.

Again, thanks for your thoughtful and kind help.

Hi Dr. Ellis (ebtdad),

Thank you for the quick reply, and sorry to hear those steps didn't work!

It sounds like the printer is having a hardware issue, so I will suggest you follow the instructions in this Performing a Partial Reset document to reset your printer.

If after this reset it still isn't working properly, it's an issue with the hardware and it may be time to upgrade the printer. If you're interested, HP has a trade in and trade up program which you can hear about by contacting HP Tech Support for your area.

Hope this does the trick for you!!
