Envy 4500
Microsoft Windows Vista (64-bit)

Envy 4500 not scanning...after receiving and then signing-up with Instant Ink program (a very cool function).

My HP computer:  Microsoft Windows Vista (64-bit).

I've tried every previously listed solutions - none worked.

Printer prints perfectly.

However, does not scan.

Questions:

1.  Is such related to receiving and then installing Instant Ink program cartridges?

(Such cartridges are larger than previously purchased, but installed correctly and printer does print from Word, etc).

2.  Do I have to upgrade to at least Windows 7?

The printer and scanning both worked perfectly...until I installed and signed-up with Instant Ink program.

My Envy 4500 is at least three years old.

Could it have simply aged-out, mechanically, or could its internal electronics simply now be in fault?

My computer is an HP Pavilion a6530f.

I value everthing HP!

Hello, @robbieEnvy4500 – Hope you are well 🙂

Thanks for stopping by the HP Support Forums! This is a wonderful location to converse with the community, get assistance and find tips!

I understand that you are having trouble scanning on your HP Envy 4500 printer. This has nothing to do with the instant ink since the print function is all ok. We need to check the copy function to further isolate the issue. Place a document face down on the scanner glass and press the copy option on the printer control panel. Let me know if it makes a good copy or not.

If the comes out good, then the printer hardware is fine and the issue could be with the printer drivers on the PC. Try reinstalling the drivers as suggested below:

  • Unplug the USB cable from the printer and computer if present.
  • Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Envy printer entries and uninstall them.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Now click on http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/COL47762/mp-115701-6/EN4500_198.exe to download and install the printer drivers.
  • Select “Wireless” in the connection type window and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Restart the PC and printer and try making a scan.

If the printer fails to make a copy, then the issue could be with the printer scanner. Try a power drain as suggested below:

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Remove USB cable, if present.
  • Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
  • Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord (This is important) and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
  • Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle and insert the cartridges.

Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!

Good luck 🙂
