Error 388 appears when I try to fax. Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

The paper feeder will not work all the time and the fax will put out an error message of 388.  Can anyone give me a solution to this problem?

Re: Error 388 appears when I try to fax. Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

Hi finderhome1,

This error will simply mean that the local machine has originated a fax session and detected a remote fax machine but has been unable to detect any T30 frames. If the machine is in V.17 mode it is likely that the connection has been interrupted. In V.34 mode, it is also possible for this error to occur because of compatibility problems with certain machines and/or line conditions.

You can re-attempt the fax transmission at a different time when line condition improves. Run a fax test if there's any failure.

You can also disable to error correction mode from the fax menu.

Lower down the fax speed from V.34 to V.17.

What printer are you using btw?

How do you change the fax speed? I have a HP 8500a Plus all in one machine. Thanks

Re: Error 388 appears when I try to fax. Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

Hi again!

You can do the following from the printer menu:

  • Run Fax Test - Right arrow button > Setup > Tools > Run Fax Test. Everything should pass.
  • Turn ECM Off - Setup > Fax Menu > Advanced Fax Settings > Error Correction Mode > Off
  • Fax Speed - Setup > Fax Menu > Advanced Fax Settings > Medium (14400)

Hope this works for you!
