I am having the same problem with disappearing scans. When I fist purchased my new Vista PC, I had to toss my older BROTHER All-in-One because BROTHER refused to create a new driver. I vowed to never buy another BROTHER product. So I purchased this Officejet Pro L7680. Everything worked okay until I tried to upgrade this machine's firmware & software. The current diagnostic said to download a fix, but after downloading and running it, it says that the software fix is not applicable to my driver.
Buying Windows 7 is not a good option... Since there are many Vista users out there, HP should fix their software problem!!!
I'm going to try reloading my original software. If that fails, I may swear off HP as well as BROTHER!

Give the fix in this thread a try...it worked for my Officejet Pro L7590 on Vista 32 bit.

Glad it worked for you!
I can't believe that HP doesn't push out a fix for this problem. I am going to think twice about buying another HP printer because of the software issues that they don't fix.

My printer is an HP L7780 AIO and it didn't help my problem. I've tried every so called solution and still isn't working. It used to work fine and then one day just stopped. You can't find the output file anywhere. I won't buy another HP.

Have had this problem. Am using Win 7, 64 bit, with an HP L7555 printer. Scan was working correctly for a while and then my scanned files disappeared (or could not be found), and the patch wouldn't apply.
Tried a couple of workarounds that helped...
To scan and save a picture file...
Open Photoshop, select File, then IMPORT, then chose your printer/scanner from the list of import options. SCAN.
File will be scanned into Photoshop. You can now name it and save it to whereever you chose. (Even if you don't have Photoshop, I have a feeling this would work with any graphics program that has an IMPORT function for bringing in a new file. )
To scan a document with OCR .....
Open HP Solution Center, select scanning function, select OCR to WORDPAD function. Scanned document opens up in Wordpad automatically - now you can name and save it to whereever you choose.
The two options above should work with any operating system.
Unbelievably after trying the two options above, I tried to just scan as I had before when I was loosing the files, and now they are appearing in the c:\Users\myusername\Pictures\My Scan folder. I never set up this folder and I don't know if I can change it, but I hope this will help anyone with a Win 7 64 bit operating system. If you have other operating system, I would love to know if this works for you.

Here is what I did to solve the problem.
Went to my wife and asked her for her All In One printer software.
Put her printer software CD in my computer and installed the Presto Page Manager vs.7 from her CD.
Now I use Presto Page Manager and it works fine with my HP L7780 AIO scanner.
Now I can scan pdf's, jpg, tiff, png, etc without any problems.
I did a quick search and I believe you can download Presto Page Manager 6 for free.
The HP software is terrible.

I don't know why your problem was fixed with Windows 7. I have a L7780 All in One Office Jet. I had Windows Vista and it worked fine. As soon as I upgraded to Windows 7, that is when the problem started. The scans apparently go to a non existant file. They just disappear. HP apparently doesn't support the printer anymore. No wonder they are in the situation they are at present. I will never but another HP printer. The only thing I can do right now which is a PITA, is to scan to a SD card and transfer the card to the computer. It works that way.
