ENVY 5640
Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan

Just tried to print off bank statements and instead of the usual black, grey and white its come out only grey and white,   where there is grey the white writing is just about visible, but where the background is white the writing is also white so invisible! all very even and clean, so not an ink issue. Have looked at other suggestions on here but don't seem to have any other option than print as a pdf, and am not doing anything different to normal.. any suggestions much apreciated!

Just compared to an old printout and its just that the black is absent. the grey is just the same as usual, but the letters and numbers are coming out white instead of black.

I understand you are having print quality issues on your HP Envy 5640 printer. Don't worry as I have a few steps to help you get through this concern,

To provide you with an accurate solution. I'll need a few more details.

Did you make any changes on the printer before the issue started?

Are you using HP genuine ink cartridges?

Have you tried to clean the cartridge contacts?

Have you tried to print a quality print report?

Have you tried printing from different Apps? Such as Word, notepad.

In the meantime, let's try these steps here:

Let's start off by performing a Hard reset on the printer and make sure that the printer is connected directly to the wall outlet and not to the surge protector.

Remove all the ink cartridges and then try to perform a hard reset on the printer.

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

Remove USB cable, if present.

Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.

Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord and then plug back the power cord to the printer.

Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.

Now insert the ink cartridges and then try to print a test page and check if it works.

Let’s first try and make a “photocopy” to determine whether the issue is with the printer or not. Place a document on the scanner glass and choose “Copy” option. If the printer is making a good copy, then the printer hardware is fine.

Next thing, I would suggest here is to Print and evaluate a Print Quality Diagnostic report, and then troubleshoot any defects: Follow solution Seven from this support document.
