The short workaround that seems to be fairly reliable is just to check "Print as Image" in the Adobe printer advanced settings.
The more permanent but slightly less reliable workaround is to completely clear out the drivers and driver cab and reinstall the modified ones, then reinstall the printer.
The best method is to take a hammer and smash the printer into little bits and then buy a new one that isn't so terrible.

Were're running XP Pro and have print spooler issues too and in our enterprise environment the users do not have admin and cannot install Vista, drivers or FoxIt.
Not a solution but what we did find was that Print As Image does help, but we've also found spooler errors when printing from any MS Office app WHEN THE PRINTER IS OFF.
The issue seems to be that the 1022 driver (and perhaps other printer drivers too) get stuck in a loop looking for the printer but not finding it even when the printer gets turned on. The spoolsvr just keeps looking and never seeing the printer, and for whatever reason Office apps seem to need something from the printer or driver (which is stuck in a loop) to work properly (possibly because many people edit Word in print-view) so Office hangs waiting for the printer or spoolsvr or whatever.
Rebooting hasn't helped us. However, if you turn the printer off again, reboot, and clear the queue of all documents (the queue sometimes takes a while to show up after reboot), then turn the printer on (wait an indeterminant amount of time to be detected) and try printing, it should print.
Note: another person here indicated that the print margins being too wide or narrow can lock up PDF printing. He didn't say what the magic margin number was (making his answer marginal - hey, it's a pun).
BTW, I've seen similar with an HP Photosmart C4580 and OSX 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8 too, so it's not just MS that fails. The Macs handle it better but won't print until the job is cancelled and re-queued.

Dit probleem treedt bij mij op bij printen naar de LJ1022 en zowel bij WindowsXP als bij Windows7. Naar andere printers dan de LJ1022 niet. De oplossing is de volgende: Ga in Windows naar de Eigenschappen van de LJ1022 en klik op 'geavanceerd'. Zorg ervoor dat er bij 'Geavanceerde afdrukopties inschakelen' GEEN vinkje staat. Ga vervolgens naar het te printen document in Acrobat Reader, klik op Afdrukken, kies Geavanceerd en zet een vinkje bij 'Afdrukken als afbeelding'. Deze instelling zal in het vervolg door Acrobat Reader worden onthouden. PDF wordt geprint en probleem is voor altijd verholpen.
