I have the K5400 where I work.  I've discovered that (because of horizontal streaks/white lines on my copies), the printhead needs to be cleaned.

I cannot - from the manual that I have - figure out how to get the printhead out of the printer.

Would you please help me?

Thank you,

Virginia Browning

Thanks for the instructions; however, my printer does not have a latch...it's actually an Officejet Pro K5400...does that make a difference (I know..........duh!)

MAJOR KUDOS to you, Michael!  I didn't realize that the printhead was not on the left side of the interior of the printer!!!  I wiped off the cyan and magenta printhead (these were the two that showed white streaks), so I'm hoping after I do the test again, this will fix the problem.

Thanks sooooooooooo much!

Be blessed, my friend!

HP PRINT AND SCAN DOCTOR "DOCTOR"

HP TOOL BOX  (after I installed this I could now see the INK LEVELS in HP PRINT AND SCAN DOCTOR)

In "DOCTOR" I printed a test page and saw NO BLACK INK.  I went to the area where I could change the

PRINT QUALITY, which meant MORE INK.  I used photo and the best options.  I got the black ink to print.

After research, I tried to clean the printheads, but no change.   SEE K5400 pdf MANUAL AT:   http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00873752.pdf     SEE PAGE 45 to PAGE 53

With WINDOWS 7 I HAVE TO USE THE CONTROL PANEL TO CLEAN AND ALIGN

AFTER OTHER RESEARCH ONE OPTION WAS TO CLEAN THE PRINTHEADS THEMSELF.  ONE OPTION WAS TO

USE DISTILLED WATER OR WINDEX CLEANER, BUT USE A CLOTH THAT DOES NOT LEAVE STUFF BEHIND.

AFTER WATCHING THE VIDEO BELOW I TOOK THE PRINTHEADS OUT AND PUT THEM UPSIDE DOWN ON A

PAPER TOWEL AND I SPRAYED WINDEX ON THE TOP OF THE PRINTHEADS WHERE THE INK COMES OUT.

I LET THE WINDEX SEAT ON IT FOR A FEW MINUTES. THEM I CLEANED IT OFF AND KEPT SPRAYING WINDEX

ON IT AND CLEANED THE HEADS.  BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN DOING THIS.  I WIPED THE HEADS OFF LONG WAYS.

(TO GO WITH THE GRAIN).  VERY, VERY CAREFULLY I WIPED THE ELETRICAL CONNECTION BECAUSE IT WAS

A LITTLE DIRTY.  WHEN I TURNED THEM RIGHTSIDE UP AND WIPED THE HEADS, THE INK CAME OUT.

AFTER I PUT THEM BACK IN AND RAN ALL THE TESTS AND PAGES TO MAKE SURE IT PRINTED GOOD (INCLUDING

THE CLEANING PRINTHEADS OPTION).   I RAN HP PRINT AND SCAN DOCTOR TO RUN THE TEST PAGE AND CHANGE THE PRINT OPTION BACK TO NORMAL PRINTING INSTEAD OF PHOTO AND BEST OPTION.  BOTH OPTIONS PRINT OUT GREAT.

I SEE THIS OPTION AS THE WAY TO GO WHEN THE PROBLEM FIRST STARTS TO APPEAR.  WITH THE PRINTER

ABILITY TO PRINTOUT IN THE "PHOTO AND BEST" MODE,  I THINK THE PROBLEM WAS NOT AS BAD AS IT

COULD BE.  AFTER THE MANUAL CLEANING OF THE PRINTHEADS EVERYTHING SEEMS TO WORK GREAT NOW.
