HP PSC1600 series not feeding paper properly

[ Edited ]

My mother's HP PSC1600 series printer is about 5 years old.  Recently, it has been having a problem where it is not feeding the paper properly  -- even when the paper tray is full, every time we try to print we get a message that the printer is out of paper.  We thought at first that it was a jam and went throught the jam removal steps on the site ( but that has not solved the problem.  When it begins to try and feed the paper, it's like it can't "grab on" to the paper to feed it into the printer.  When we gently push the paper in as it feeds, it works, but we don't really want to have to babysit the printer with each page -- especially when we print long documents!  Any ideas about what could be going on or how to fix it?
