Our printer has been working well until a couple of days ago. Now, when we print, the print dialogue open but constantly says 'The printer is not connected'. I have tried to connect to the router using the printer's display but get a message saying 'connection failed'. I have rebooted eveything on numerous occasions.

At some point during the last couple of days I managed to get it so that our imac had found the printer and actually thought it was printing, but nothing happened at the printer end. Now I am back to 'the printer is not connected'. I do not know what caused that to change or change back.

Someone had mentioned putting a static ip address into the printer so I tried this (assuming I was doing it correctly) by going through Settings-wireless-advanced settings-ip settings-manual where it says ip address no link and then putting an ip address in, but this wasn't accepted and still says 000.000.000.000.

The Wireless Network Test report initially suggested MAC enabling could be the problem but somehow I have got past that (don't know how) and the latest report has 'PASS all the way down but at the top suggests an IP address problem by saying that our 'HP printer is currently configured with an auto IP address. On most networks this will prevent your printer from communicating over the network.......perform the following solution". The solution suggests rebooting then printing a test report again and then says 'to verify that the printer has received a DHCP IP address from your network router, check the configuration source in the current configuration section of the report - it should show DHCP'. But having rebooted again the ip address shows 0.0.0.0 and the configuration source says 'not specified'. The test report gives no solution to change the ip to show DHCP so I am stuck. My advanced settings still say IP settings - automatic. Help appreciated. Thanks. P.S I'm not good with all this techy speak though I am amazed that I think I understand what I have written!

i removed the ssid password and managed to print. I've put the password back in, it defaulted to WPA & WPA2 (I don't have WPA2-AES) and again the printer cannot connect. The print report again now says FAIL at No filtering and implies it is something to do with mac filtering being enabled which I don't fully understand. Thanks for your help so far. We are meant to be taking the kids to the cinema so may not be back on for a while.

Reset the printer back to Network Defaults. Now start again.

Thanks for the reply. We had tried that but I have just done it again. I then used the Wireless Setup Wizard and again it has not been able to connect. The test results now say  MAC address filtering may be enabled. I've logged into the router and the prtinter is there under wireless connections with the MAc address but says not connected. Beyond that though i don't know if i should do anything in the router's settings.

Temporarily remove the password off your SSID on the router. Now try to connect to your unsecured SSID. Are you successful? If yes, go back and add WPA2-AES with your password and try again.

OK, so it connects with no password right? In the router it may show as WPA2 - Personal. Try that. Or try WPA only.

Yes! It worked with WPA only. Thank you. Could you explain what WPA and WPA2 mean? And if there are any implications with swapping from one to another? We have options of WPA & WPA2, WPA only, WPA2 only, WEP (64/40 bit) or none. Maybe if I understood these I could work it out myself a bit more. Thank you again.

Hate to say this, most likely a router issue. Make and model?
