HP won't scan with IMAC

I've got an all-in-one HP PSC 1610 printer that does not want to scan from my IMAC.  The message tells me: scanner cannot be initialized.  Can anyone help?  All I want to do is scan a reference letter to send with an application.  AUUUGHHHHHHHHH!  I hate the IMAC!  (And that's coming from a PC' er the past ten years.  I wouldn't recommend switching over to Apple to even my worst enemy!)   HELP!

Re: HP won't scan with IMAC

This isn't a Mac problem, it is an HP software issue.  I am having the same issue with a Photosmart 2610.  When I downloaded and installed the HP software suite, for some reason the scanner software drivers were not installed.   Now all I want to do is get those drivers, but I'm damned if I can see a wya to do that without reinstalling the entire 186 MB package.

HP People: How about breaking the driver downloads into components?
