I have a 5 yr. old K550 Pro Officejet. I don't use it as often since I retired and the yellow expired in September. I don't get an expired ink msg. but the printer won"t print. The magenta and cyan expire in 11 days. They have a lot of ink left I have found information that says the expiration dates can be overridden but not how to do it. I'm not incredibly tech savvie so I hope it's simple but mostly I hope someone has an answer.

Hi,
Only a few printers have expiration. You don't need to do anything until a warning appears. When you get the warning message on your computer, it will give you your options. Check out the webpage linked below for futher details about the expiration feature:
http://www.hp.com/pageyield/en-019/articles/inkExpiration.html?cCode=us&jumpid=reg_r1002_usen
At the bottom of the page, it gives you an idea of how to find specific instructions, if you can't figure them out from the message itself.

Hi,
I have an HP Photosmart 7460, purchased in 2008. It has hardly been used, since I've been using work's. After recently retiring, I installed a black cartridge on 7/9/15, which was bought ~ 2 years earlier. The printer has not work since then, saying the cartridge expired on 7/9/15.
I found info indicating the expiration date on this printer can be overriden, but there are no directions in the Basics Guide that came with it and HP no longer supports the machine. I hope someone can give me simple directions to override the expiration date, since I am not IT savy.
Thanks so much.

Hi,
Sorry that I'm not too familiar with older printers like yours, so can't give you exact instructions.
Usually the override instructions appear with the "expired cartridge" message and it generally is just a matter of hitting the OK or Resume button on the computer screen, or on the printer. Most printers will also have the appropriate button lit or blinking.

Unfortunately pressing ok on the printer does not work and I do not see a resume option on the printer or computer. After pressing print on the computer, nothing happens. Then after opening the active printer incon, "error printing" appears under status.
Any other ideas?

Hi LP140,
Sorry for your troubles, but if you're getting a different error message (not expired cartridge), then maybe you just need to restart the printer to clear the error?
If that doesn't help, you might need to try the whole works - turn off the computer and printer and restart everything? Lastly, there is a more drastic printer reboot that might help clear errors. You make sure it is turned on and then (carefully) unplug the power cord from the printer, and then from the wall socket. Wait a few minutes and then connect everything and turn it on again.
Unfortunately, that's all the tricks I know of to help. Sometimes the older printers just stop working properly and that might be the real problem?

The printer is giving me the expired cartridge message. It is the computer that says "error printing" when I open the printer icon on the bottom of the screen.
I tried your later recommendation with no luck. I understand the printer is old, but it has hardly been used. It looks new.
Anyway thanks for your efforts. I'll give it one more try and buy another cartridge.
