I have a Laserjet M1212nf MFP printer. A few days ago the ink levels were fine, but today I got the 'Install black cartridge'. I bought a new cartridge, but the message persists. I have tried taking it out a few times, and I have powered down and restarted. It makes no difference.
Any idea how to proceed?

Sorry that you are having an issue with the black cartridge not reading correctly. You can try to clean the cartridge and the print head.
Sometimes the print head does not read the contacts correctly, and needs servicing.
Here is a link for this issue. I hope this helps.

It turns out that there was a piece of paper in the machine from a print job that had been cancelled. Not sure why it was stuck there, or why the error message related to the print cartidge, but removing the paper cleared the error.
So problem solved. Thanks.

Glad to see everything is working correctly. It probably gave the error because the paper was blocking the ink cartridge contacts and was not able to move or read them correctly.
If you run into any other problems, feel free to ask.

After reading this thread, I discovered a sheet of paper from the paper tray had been fed only about 1/2 inch into the printer. The paper jam error had cleared, but the sheet of paper was causing the 'Install Black Cartridge" error.
Sheet removed, error message cleared, sanity restored!
Forum was far more helpful than HP support pages, thank you!!
