I'm sorry I was not clear. My situation is a small office run by myself with a peer to peer workgroup network. I tried to add a printer using the add printer option on the control panel by selecting a network printer. That didnot work. It would go through the motions, look up windows update for drivers and then ask for a driver. I had downloaded PL5 and PL6 and when installing them it would not find the printer at: \\computerX\HPLaser1300 even though it saw it on the network when starting the install. I then pluged the printer in as you sugested and got it to work attached but could not redirect it after putting it back on the other computer. I did find this solution that did work:
Start the Add a printer wizard.
Choose Add a local printer.
Click on Create a new port. Use Local Port.
In the Enter a Port Name box, type the path to the printer:
\\(computer name)\(printer name)
Then select the proper driver, and print a testpage.
Thank you for your reply. I lost a lot of time trying to solve this problem. I hope this answer will help others.
This solution did not work for my Sharp AR168 however because the driver is not on the list that pops up. I will contact my Sharp dealer and find out what driver will work for that printer, copier and fax machine.

After 3 days of trying to get a Windows 7 64 Bit Dell to print on a HP LaserJet 1300 connected to an XP machine, this was the post that will allow me to get some sleep. Thank you! Took 2 minutes to create the ports on my new Dell machines and they are printing fine.

After further investigation I found this which solved the problem:
Go to:
Control panel then Settings then Add Printer
Choose "Add a local printer". Click on "Create a new port". Use Local Port.
Next dialogue box is "Enter a Port Name."
Type in the path to the printer: \\(computer name)\(printer name).
Then select the proper driver, and print a testpage.

Don't use the CD. Just connect it to your Win 7 computer and let Windows find the correct driver. Be sure to check the box to let Windows search online.
Go back and read some of the early posts in this thread.

Just bought a new desktop with Windows 7 (64 bits). LaserJet 1300 prints emails, word docs, etc, but will not print Adobe 9.2 PDF docs. What it prints out instead is a one-page HP Laser Jet 1300 spec sheet. What gives?
