M1212nf MFP
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

After years of good work my MFP is no longer scanning but continues to print.

If I try ADF it scans 4 pages (consistent) and stops.

If I try without ADF, the scanner moves up and down and stops.

The HP interface has the scanning bar forever, slowly (hours) advancing while printer goes idle. If I try to cancel says "cancelling" but does nothing. If I try to kill from Win task manager, the application is irresponsive and have to force kill.

PC and MFP are on the same ethernet and I also tried different cables.

I already updated MFP microcode and HP Win SW.

Tried HP Doctor that repaired something in the first ball (test) but didn't solve and gave back no other error.

Last try was to connect using the USB cable and... works !!!

Using USB I can do my work for some time, but I need to have the scanned working with ethernet.

Please let me know what else I can do...

Thanks

Hi @ghep,

Good Day. Thanks for posting your query in the HP community. I read the post regarding scanning related issues with the printer. It will be a pleasure to assist you here.

Commendable diagnosis and splendid description of the issue before posting. Hats off you on that score. 🙂

  • Did this happen after a windows or software update?
  • Did you try to make a few copies directly from the printer without any communication from the computer?

Please make 2 copies each directly from the flatbed and ADF without any communication from the printer.

If it copies fine, then please uninstall the printer software completely by following these steps and then reinstall it.

  • Uninstall the printer from "programs and features" which can be accessed by doing a right-click on the Windows button (Please have the printer Off and disconnected during uninstallation.)
  • Check in device manager, if the printer is listed there, please delete it. (Right click on the Windows button to access device manager)
  • Go to devices and printers, select any printer listed there and you will get some options on the top.
  • Click on print server properties.
  • You will get a popup, click on the drivers tab and delete all the HP printer drivers listed there, if any.
  • Delete all the instances of your printer listed in devices and printers.
  • Restart the PC.
  • Once the PC is on the desktop, press Win + R, it would bring a Run dialog box,
  • Type %temp% in the run box and click Ok or hit the Enter button.
  • It would bring up the temporary files folder. Delete the files in the folder (You might not be able to delete all the files).
  • If possible, delete the printer from the registries using Regedit or using any other 3rd party application.
  • Ignore the Regedit option if it cannot be done.
  • Restart the PC again.
  • Download the latest full feature driver from www.hp.com/drivers and install it on the computer.
  • Connect the printer to your computer only when the setup prompts for the printer.

This should do the trick for you. Also, if it is not resolved, please perform all the prescribed steps patiently from this document Network Scanner Connection Error to try and resolve the issue. It is very important to perform ll the steps as it could resolve the issue for you. 🙂

Hope this helps. Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great.

David,

thanks a lot for the extensive post.

Local scan from ADF and flatbed works.

I did follow all the long recommendations then as did not solve.

I did notice that "scan it" preserved all options even performing all the steps I had to, but was not able to find where to clean up.

All is in the same situation as it was. No change at all.
Now I did "run the doctor".

After I selected the scanner it is at least 30 min that doctor is stalled as you can see in the following image. Back button is grayed and not selectable. The same did happen originally in my personal toubleshooting.

Capture.JPG

The printer is doing nothing (top green led slowly flashing, display with "scanning to PC") and I have the scanning interface as attached... even if the scan bar went fully up and down.

Capture2.JPG

The browser interface of the printer works and replicate the scanning to pc status info.

The scanning box now has 2 green bocks vs 1. I know that giving enough time (hours) more boxes will fill the bar. Never had time to wait till the end.

What else?

Clearly doctor is not intercepting the issue...

Thanks again.

Hi @ghep,

I reviewed the post comprehensively. Great troubleshooting and brilliant effort. Kudos to you for that. 🙂  If you've tried all the steps and nothing seems to work, I would suggest that you backup all your important data and reinstall windows to factory settings and try to connect the printer and install it.

This should do the trick for you.

Thanks to you David.

I will not install win7 as that would be really a large effort (many days).

Anyway possibly is something in the OS, luckly not in the printer.

The doctor finally finished.

I'm doing a test scan but is taking forever as it was.

Hi @ghep,

Great response and brilliant troubleshooting Hats off to you on that score. 🙂 Please try to use the windows built-in drivers from this link: http://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c01796879 for printing issues in future and that should do the trick for you.

For scanning issues, you could use the HP scan and capture app and that should resolve your scanning problems. Please visit that document to install and use HP scan and capture. It has  FAQs on how to troubleshoot and use it. This should help you to scan without hassles.
