NO MECH mode on HP PSC 1600 series printer

We are having an issue with our printer HP PSC 1600. When we turn it on we get three messages with the on light flashing:
1) no mech mode
2) Used black ink printer cartridge installed. Press ok to continue
3) Used tri-colour ink printer cartridge installed. Press okay to continue.

If we attempt to print anything from any program, the printer flashes "printing...." over and over, and i must disconnect the power to restart the printer.

please help!
