I have a Officejet 6500. The printer is about 14 months old and has worked well until about a month ago.
When the black ink level shows 1/2 full it will not print black. I replaced the 920 XL ink with a new one and it will print black ink until the cartridge is about 1/2 full and quits printing black. I have no problems with the color inks.
Has anyone else had this problem or have an answer on how to fix it.

Have you tried checking the cartridge is vented properly? It's also worth cleaning the printhead
Please let me know if this solves your issue

Thank you for the info. I have followed the 1st part by check the vent on one of the old cartridges. After cleaning the vent and reinstalling it , it now seams to be printing again. I will keep an eye on it.

i also have a 6500 all-in-one. that has been working fine. When the print quality began to fade , I jchanged out the print cartridges with new HP 920 carts. the unit now won't print any black. the black cart is a 920XL. I have checked and reinstalled mutiple times. I have cleaned the print heads. I have done an alignment check. I have checked the venting. I have done a phase two cleanling. Nothing works. Help

Having major problem with excessive ink usage - as crazy as it sounds I'm only able to make 15 - 25 copies of normal, basic quality, print only (no graphics) before I get the low ink warning. The worse offenders are cyan and black cartridges. This last time I installed all new cartridges did a printhead cleaning and the low ink warning messages came on. Other than purchasing another printer/all in one from another manufacturer is there another solution?

not that I know of. I haven't had excessive ink usage that you had. I am now getting no black ink on new cartridges. I cleaned everything that one can clean and still doesn't work. My workaround is print everything in another color until you buy another printer. Up to this time I have had HP printers and was pleased with each model. They make it cheaper to buy new than to fix things - the consumer just loses time and patience with this process.

I also have an HP 6500 Printer that started exhibiting the same symptoms "Black Ink" not working. I changed the Black cartridge and cleaned the print heads and still no Black Printing. Went through all the diagnostics with no errors resulting.

I gave up and am in process of trading in the 6500 for a new 4500 ($89). They are supposed to give a $40 return on old printer. They are currently out of the 6500 in stock. they also say they have no print heads for the 6500 to sell you. In my opinion that would solve the problem. With the rebate, this is cheaper than Costco. Good luck.
