I finally fixed mine by buying a Cannon.

Bought this printer yesterday, and found today that it won't feed any of my photo paper (some older epson and no-name a4 papers). But I found a trick that works for me: basically, I move the rear blue tab in the paper tray a few mm shorter than normal, so that the feeder side of the paper is up on an incline toward the feeder. I think this gives the feeder less work to do to grab the paper, so it manages. Hope this helps someone.

Thanks so much!  This did the trick.  I didn't have to update anything on my computer.  I just went into the printer preferences and change the paper type to HP photo.

Ok, odd.  I was actually trying to reply to an earlier post, where someone explained the printer settings, so I'll clarify.

I was experiencing the same non-feed issue, but after reading someone else's post I changed the paper type.  File --> Print --> Print Preferences --> changed from plain paper to HP Photo Paper, and it did the trick!  The feed was flawless and perfect prints.

Hooray!!!  I was great relieved, because this unit is brand new.  Glad I didn't have to return it!

Like magic.  I was having the same issues not being able to print on photo paper I got from costco.  All setting were checked.  I printed from Iphoto on my mac and,     it printed!!!!  Then i was able to print from an sd card put into the slot on the printer.  Last, I was able to print from my i phone wirelessly.  Hopefully we're good,  I hope.   So i think your right,  maybe the 1st print has tp come from the computor, not the printer slots.  Hopefully that helps.  I am amazed that its this big of an issue and that Hp hasnt chimed in on this issue.

After a year, I am still struggling with this printer. it usually takes 5 or 6 tries to trick it into taking a page of standard photo paper. My advice is to return your printer if you still can and purchase another  rand.  I talked to an HP rep who suggested that I only buy special HP printer paper.

Today found a solution - I think.  After trying 5 or 6 different papers and weights, Kodak, Epson, Staples, Kirkland, HP.  From 66 lbs to 72 lbs.  Nothing worked.

Today tried HP Everyday Photo Paper - 53 weight. Found at Office Depot.  Worked.  Must remove all paper from tray and feed photo paper one sheet at a time.

This is such a BS problem.  Never should have occurred.  HP needs to reinvent the 8600.

Good luck.

I had the same problem. I rebooted the printer by disconnecting the power cord for 15+ seconds . The photo paper now feeds fine. I call it "windows" universal fix for all thing computers. Nowadays even printers are electro-mechnical software controlled devices and that means other than electrical and mechanical problems, the printer might be having its own "OS" with accompnying software issues/bugs. Rebooting usually "resets" the "OS" and solves any software related issues.

My fix for 8600 not accepting glossy photo paper:

So far only HP 53 lbs glossy will work.  Have to empty paper tray and feed one sheet at a time.  Seems like a BS solution to an otherwise adequate printer.

Experimented with paper brands from Kirkland (Costco), Staples, HP, Kodak, Epson.  Started at 72 lbs, worked my way slowly down to 53 lbs paper before HP 8600 would accept and print.  Wasted a lot paper and time spent experimenting and returning product on way to this solution.

HP -- FIX THIS.
